MAF issue/ computer tune

Just thought Id drop in and see if I could get a second opinion on this. I have a 92 F-150 302 and a few months back, when idling, it was really rough and would flucuate between 1000rpm to 500 rpm and eventually die out. I pulled the plug on the MAF sensor and now it idles but OF COURSE is running really lean. I keep replacing the MAF with junkyard MAFs (mainly from 93 mustangs). I know that this can be really bad for the motor since the ECC reads that to tell the motor what to do (ie fuel/air ratio). Since a new MAF is pretty expensive would I be better off just hooking back up the sensor and get a computer tune and see if that will fix the issue?

Reconnect your MAF meter and pull the codes from the computer, that should always be the first step when troubleshooting an EFI motor. On a side note, idle problems on these motors are often related to a dirty IAC(idle air control) valve, rinsing it liberally with carb cleaner while the engine is running often smooths things out.
