EDELBROCK FORD 300 INTAKE

I saw one on ebay a while ago. I didn't know they made one with all the stock stuff on them. At least they used to but not anymore. Does anyone have any experience with them? Are they a waste of time with the one barrel carb? Just curious. It is sort of interesting since it looks smog legal and I'm in CA. I figured with some smog headers and a new ignition, I might be able to see some gains in power.

Dont know about the edelbrock, but offenhauser C series bolts right up to the stock exhaust manifold. Tried the one barrell(with an adapter plate that I made) but did not notice any difference in power. Switched to the 500cfm edelbrock carb and with header installed it made a big difference, but, no smog checks for 25 year old trucks in Oklahoma. I have heard that 390 or 450 hollies tune well with the 300cid engine.

rpspwp:

Before you do any modifications to your truck's engine, make sure you can modify it. Check with state laws first. California isn't very friendly from what I have heard when it comes to dealing with people modifying there vehicles.

Tried offenhauser c series intake. Looks better than it works. Some performance gain, especially with a 4 barrel, but tuning will be a problem. Fuel seems to condense inside those nice long runners, and rear cylinders burn too rich as the fuel runs downhill inside the intake manifold. C series makes it's home on shop wall now. Turbocharging the ticket for me.

Tuning is no problem with 02 sensors installed in the collectors. Also, a little port work to open up the breathing capabilities of that 300 head seams to work magic. Cant get enough HP? Try a 240 head, bump the compression. Install larger valves. Heck, if all else fails, turbo charge it.

Bottom line, what works for some, dont work for others. Do your research, listen to people that have been there, check your budget, and then make a choice.

The Edelbrock intake was designed during the Arab oil embargo fuel crisis in the 70s to improve fuel economy. It will not gain you much if any performance, but it looks like a more efficient intake than the stock Ford log intake.

I didn't notice the date either. Sometimes its good to re-plow old ground on topics discussed years ago - especially if newer members do a search and still have lingering questions.

Sounds like his manifold needed some heat. If somebody runs into a similar problem, maybe the answer would be to weld some aluminum tube to the underside of it, cap the ends of the tube, and plumb it to engine coolant. Before welding, preheat the manifold and tubing to 175-200F, and have the welder use the usual welder-tricks to minimize distortion. Since this isn't structural, the job might be done with that aluminum "brazing" rod they use to weld beer cans together at swap meets where they sell the stuff.

Only reason I'm adding this is that I've seen about three hundred of these manifold discussions, and some newbie is liable to come here to find out about it.

richard, if you are still watching I'll trade you your Offy wall art for some of my own. I've got everything from 4' x 8' banners to high tech carbon fibre bike frames.
