Recent increases in our old trucks values

You guys been eyeing the values? Just for sh!&$ and giggles, I peeked into NADA, and was shocked at the skyrocket. Last year, a '55 F-100 pickup had a high retail NADA price of around 18K, today, 35K. This is largely to the efforts of guys and gals like us that have resurrected these old piles of iron into beautifl works of art. That and the fact that more and more are ending up in the scrap yard, and they are indeed gettin VERY VERY scarce. We all might seriously consider stocking up on parts, and barn finds, as they rich and famous that are wanting a Foose mobile are going to make all of our dreams a nightmare. I don't know if we should pat eachother on the back, or hang our heads in shame. Anyhow, was interesting to see the drastic jump in a years time, and I thought I would share it.

The cost of redoing old vehicles has jumped tremendously as well.

While the show-quality restored cars/trucks have gone up in the big-ticket auctions, it looks to me like unrestored, "daily driver" stuff seems to be going down (at least around here). I think it's because of the gas costs and the economy in general. The market is flooded with special interest '60's cars, H-D's, and high-dollar luxury cars.

I personally think eBay and Barret-Jackson auctions, along with the high price for scrap metal, has driven the value of all old vehicles. Everyone who has an old, rusty relic sitting in their yard or behind a building thinks it's covered with gold. It is turning this hobby into a rich man's hobby.

I am lucky I found my trucks before the big spike 4 or 5 years ago. I bought my '51 F-4 about six years ago from a guy trying to sell it on eBay. It didn't sell, I contacted the seller and bought it for $450. I have since seen trucks in worse condition sell for twice that much, even more.

Rarity also plays a big role, to quote an old guy at a junkyard when he told the price of some way overpriced truck parts that were rotting in his yard, "They ain't makin' em anymore."

I have just had mine for 2 years. I can't really tell much of a difference one way or another in that ammount of time. When I was looking at trucks...there were several rust buckets (basket cases) that they were asking $2,000 for. They still seem to be.

i dunno about you guy's but i get offers all the time to buy the 53 , and i had one city truck driver who was picking up limbs make an offer on the 49 . i'm flattered but it's annoying too . add in the fact that they both are kinda rough lookin ' so they think they're gonna be cheap ......... . add in what you are saying about the prices and the lack of other old iron and we are either sitting on a gold mine or like me who wants to keep what i got , gonna be getting very , very annoyed . the last couple of offers were insulting too on bessie and they were rude . no means no .one guy actually offeres me 2500 . yeah i dont think so . so i geusss 'tween your reports and all the other things i'm gonna have to go find some one shot and put dont ask the answer is NO !!!!! in the back windows . i geuss too i'm gonna have to be smarter 'bout my parts as i am not looking to get rich or stick it too anyone , but if they're gonna increase in value like that nope no more nice guy 'cept to you fella's .

Yeah, I remember back in the 80's and 90's, we had 17 53-56 Effies at one time, and 23 Falcon, Comet, etc. cars. If we could of waited, we'd be able to retire...lol. I agree, that Barrett Jackson, and the internet sites are truely making the hobby difficult. So, I say to all of you.....Now may be the time to bite the bullet, and go get those relics, even if you don't have an immediate use for it. At least that way, you know that those of that really care about these old trucks will have our needs for them and their parts taken care of. Those damn Yuppies and techno-geeks that are making millions, need to stay the hell away from our old iron, they are ruining it for the rest of us.

It is also somewhat cyclical with Gas price, Tax time and the holidays normally factoring in. The best deals are still had around these times on the local level when the seller " needs" the cash the most. The best deals are also on the started project where the seller gets in to deep to fast looking for instant gratification and then reality hits. There is a chopped 56 Big Window in the Denver paper for 4500.00 and the hard work done. Some of the finished pricing is surprising, I drove my 56 to my agent to get coverage on the 63 Falcon and after seeing the 56 he told me get an appraisal since he thought 30K was to low. After that I had to jump to 45K coverage (21.00/yr diff) due to replacement cost. I told him I have only 18 or so in it, but he reminded me that I would not be the person fixing or rebuilding it, so............I would most likely need to replace it from the current market at those prices. I would hate to use my own money to pay a price like that, but feel great nonetheless that I built a quality truck at home that is worth market price (according to the "pro's"). I suppose I should go get the big win and sit on it or send it to U-Pay so some poor soul can feel proud.

I have many yrs involved in building 69 1/2 6 pac cars....I finally said--enough is enough!!! The prices are INFLATED TO BEAT THE BAND. I finally came back to my 1st love and the 56 ford effies.....I can buy parts and not have to sell an arm.
In the 70s --my buddy started hoarding all mopar muscle cars. He has well over 300 vehicles. They are all marked and cosmolined and tarped. Over the yrs--every mopar guy wanted a part and he never would sell anything. Even I had to bargain with him,and I helped him collect most of his treasures/ NOW----THEY ARE WORTH A FORTUNE!!!! I think I will continue to collect stock 56 ford effies.....But --it is out of LOVE!!! NOT MONEY!!!! MONEY TALKS and B.S. WALKS is not my anthem!!!! I love old trucks and will till I am gone. The guys that are money grubbers will never get the satisfaction that love of something can give you. Sorry--the pain is gettin' to me!! LOL Bill
