My daughter was driving my oil leaking 71 f100 truck (that my friends called the Exxon Valdez) and ran it out of oil and cooked my 360. I want to buy a motor from the junk yard and do a quick easy drop it in to get me throufh the winter so I can finish the EFI upgrade that I am working toward.
My question is what are my enginge year and size options for a direct drop in that will work with my tranny, motor mounts and ect...
I agree, 360 or 390 would bolt right in. Just keep an eye on the flywheels and clutch plates, the 390 might be a bigger clutch. You can just use the 360 flywheel in that case.
Otherwise, a 410 or 428 might bolt in if they have the right exhaust manifold bolt pattern. Just be sure to use the 410/428 flywheel.
As for what years, all years of 360, and later 390 - there might be a motor mount issue with the pre-65 or so, I believe.
Might want to ask in the FE forum.

you can also put in a 330-361-391 .you can find them in bseries busses.also big f series trucks .they have a govener that you can set for what max rpm you want.they eat gas but have lots of low end torque.doug herbert has mechanil fuel injection.that works good.no computer.the fuel injection is called the flying toilet bowl.

Those are FT engines. They are externally balanced so the flywheel is different.
They also have motor mounts on the cast-iron timing cover, NOT the engine block. With the FT crank snout being larger, the timing cover from the FE will not fit (unless it's certain 330's). The exhaust manifolds are also different.
Stick with an FE. An FT engine would slow you down in terms of HP. They are torque monsters.
Not impossible to put an FT in there, but more work than you think upfront

Art is right, with the forged steel cranks in the FTs, they don't rev enough for light vehicle use, and with their lethargic compression ratio and cam profiles, they are made to haul heavy loads.
You shouldn't have any problem finding another 360 in the junkyards, a 390 is a little more difficult, but they can be found.
And watch out, lots of "390s" out there are really 360's when you get them home

look around you may also be able to find a 352 which will bolt in also, although you may have to use your pan and pickup tube and flywheel since most of them will be in cars.
