2005 5.4 3 valve ticking

I've got a 2005 F-350 5.4 with 50,000 miles. It just recently started ticking and it sounds like the valve train. Has anybody seen this problem with these engines, or have any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I think he is asking if the tempo of the "tick" goes up or down with RPM? If it stays constant tempo, then you have some other issue.

5.4l ticking sound

when i went to a dealer to solve a issue i had, i asked them about the ticking noise. The reply i got is that it is a normal sound, its the timing chain, as the timing chain tensioner wears down it gives the chain more room to slap around, which is the ticking sound you hear. i was told that some engines do it more then others but is a common thing. i do have the same thing but am not worried. Thanks for the info Cory, I have been trying to narrow the tic tic down and it seems that it goes away around 1400 rpm when the engine is cold and realy isn't that noticable until the engine tempreture comes up around normal.I always let the engine warm up for a few before I go usually when it idles down around 900 rpm or so I just have a thing about letting the oil get every where it needs to be and at least a little warm. I get this from my airframe and power plant certification this is a little more important with aircooled aircraft engines than water cooled but it just seems the right thing to do even at the decrease in totle fuel economy. I am familiar with timeing chain slap in motorcycle engines but with an engine that is modular and very sufisticated I should think it should purr like a kitten all the way up to at least 100,00 mi. Maybe I am just a little shell shocked because I had a 2001 Lariet with 22,000 and the 5.4 2v per had an oil pump problem it ate the cam, but this engine is more superior to most engines on the market and the purr factor should be ovious due to the fact my 05 lariat screwcab is well a luxury performance truck.
Cory if I find out the real reason for the tic i ta tic tic I will reply to you asap .
Thanks Man have a good one and remember ford # 1

WOW, Just tore down a friends Triton 5.4 3 valve per cyiider 2005 model and came to a very disturbing conclusion. How can ford motor company go to sleep at knight knowing that this engine is the leaste poweful engine in the ford arsenal. the claim of 300 horse power is so over exagerated that if you feel good about the tree hunderd horse power you should realize this is an advertising ploy to make the uninformed believe this is the total power at the rear wheels ( ABOUT 230HORSEPOWER IS THE AVERAGE AT THE ASS END). With a blower and forged pistons a turboed intake with Ice cooed intate a cody camp cam and perterium crank using a max10 computor we were able to pump out 923hp with 93 octain pump gas although we did add Marvel mistory oil to preclude any detinaton using the cheep crap pump gas. In the neer future we will be redy to combine both turbo charging and turbo waist fuel for cooling under an engine that just mabe turning the high 10s burning a mixture of pump gas and
HYDROGEN/OXYGEN BOOST. this is not a dream as i have disscovered a sinple methed to ocomplish this . its reallh not that hard it just takes a specific catholist.
this is not rocked scientist just the correct catholist.

Fastrandy, you might want to try a spell checker, your last post makes absolutely no sense to me at all. Sorry bud.

Also fastrandy, every brand rates the horspower off the crank and not at the wheel. No Scooby-Do mystery here to solve.
