Question engine smokes/shuts off under throttle

I have a 1997 e350 diesel model that smokes excessively and shuts off under acceleration.I expect the fuel filter needs to be changed. My question is WHERE is that particular filter located and could I be right on this? It certainly ACTS as if there is water or starving for fuel when u accelerate it.Any help is much appreciated. WILL

If it is a 1997 it's a PSD.This is the pre PSD section of the forum. Someone will be able to help you, but you will get more info faster on the 94.5 to 97 PSD section. Hope you get it fixed.

How many miles on your van? also have you checked the air filters lately? the fuel is not fun to get to on your van! You have remove the air filter tubing and all that stuff so you can get to the top of the engine. It might actually be easy to get to the filter from the back thru the dog house. PM madvan. he has a van and can lead you step by step thru it. here is a pic of the engine where the filter is located

Sorry for the previous post. I'am on the wrong forum. Due for new glasses in Jan. I guess I better get them. Good luck with the van.
