Four wheel drive question

I went to turn on my four wheel drive today and had a significant loss of power, I was just wondering if this was normal.

Thanks for any feedback

I expect it's not normal, but we'd need some specifics.

After the other electrical problems, are you talking about a loss of electrical power (lights and stuff stop functioning or function weakly) or are you talking about drivetrain output? In either case, can you describe the power loss in more detail?

Do you have the electric shift or manual shift t-case?

Functioning weakly, nothing stopping but definately a heavy dim of the dash lights. Also its an electric shift.

So it's an electrical issue. Unfortunately for you, it's a fairly rare complaint on these boards, so I doubt you are going to get a ready response with a simple fix. You're probably going to have to wade through the wiring to find the short that is causing the power drain.

Is it a steady power drain (lights dim the whole time the t-case is in 4H) or only while the t-case is shifting, and then everything comes back to normal?

The most likely culprit is the shift motor on the transfer case and it is stuck. There are a few threads in the Explorer forum on cleaning them.

The best solution is going all manual, but, if you have a EB with the console, then that might not be an option.
