1997 Lifted F350 7.3 Diesel. Opinions Wanted.
I stumbled across this truck going through craigslist. I knew I should stay off that site! Anyway, what do you guys think of this truck. I would use this pretty much as my daily driver. Might be overkill, but it'd be cool. It's no longer than my crew cab F250 that I have now. It would replace my Dodge Dakota so I would be back to all Fords. I'm a little worried about the high mileage, but I know these motors will go forever.

Looks a little pricey for the miles. Also, try to find out how long the lift has been on the truck (mileage). The lifts are a little harder on suspension components, especially with the size tires that are on that unit.
I will agree that the 7.3L will last a long time, but only if it has been taken care of. There are a few things you can check on the motor (such as the turbo if you pop the air inlet tube off - search this forum). Also, ask the guy about what kind of maintenance he has done to the truck. One of the worse things you can do to these trucks, IMHO, is neglect them.
Having said all that, good luck with the search, and let us know if you go look at it!

I asked him for some more pics. He says that it is in mint shape. Everything is perfect. Used to haul horse trailers before he bought it. Not really what I wanted to hear, but I expect a truck like that to have some pulling time with it. It's got two sets of brand new 38" tires and wheels. 38x13 tsls on street locks and 38x15.50x18 truxus sts ats on new diamo wheels. The lift is a year old. He had it installed when he bought it. Upgraded CD player with amps and subs. No real big deal there. As long as the county music still sounds good I'll be happy. It has a programmer and dual exhaust. Both are a year old. The trucks was fully stock up until a year ago. He said it looks like it has 60,000 on it. He seems to be on the ball. Oil changes have been done every 3,000 miles. He has a folder of reciepts. Seems to be a pretty nice truck. the towing scares me a little and it still has the stock 3.73 gears. What do you guys think? What kind of fuel mileage would I be looking at? The only thing I'd change it I'd straight pipe it to 6" mitre cut stacks. Best part is he might straight trade me for my '03 Dakota with 118K on the clock.

If he'll trade I do it in a heart beat. Towing is no big deal. but those tires with those gears are murdering the tranny. I would down size the tires especially since this will be your daily driver from the sounds of it. Actually I doubt it has 3.73's probably 3.55's. I don't think anybody made 3.73's for the OBS.

He said it has a Sterling rear end. I really like the look of the lift and the tires. I would change them tho in order to keep the tranny happy. He sent me some more pics. This truck is amazing. He wants me to call him tomorrow and see what we can work out. It'd probably take my truck and my '01 Polaris 500 4x4 ATV, but it'd be worth it from the looks of the truck. Never seen salt. I can't find and rust on it. It's got a Skyjacker lift with triple shocks.

I have the same lift on a 97 std cab powerstroke. I have had the lift on there for 5 years and I run 38" TSL swampers. (front bumper moved out 2") all I can complain about is ball joints! I have gone through a set and am putting in new ones this next week. I only use my truck to tow and haul, and occasional daily driven. I have put 30k on it in this time. Otherwise no complaints.
