Actual MPG with F-150

I am interested in buying a F-150 with the 4.6 and automatic trans. I'd like to get the tow package also. The EPA estimates are that the truck will get an average 18MPG driving 50% city and 50% highway. I commute 130 miles per day, so this is a concern. Can anyone verify that these are real figures? Does anyone have any experience with better mileage?

It varies entirely on how heavy your foot is. I've seen lots of concerns about milage. For the most part, its almost always below the EPA estimate.

I own a 98 F-150, 4.6 v8 with tailer tow package.
This came with a 355 rear end ratio.I travel about
24 miles a day to work, some highway and some town.
I average between 17 and 18 mpg.I also have a lite
weight truck camper. With the camper on I can average 22 mpg at highway speeds.

I just bought a new 2000 F150 XLT SC, 4.6L, Automatic, 3.55 rearend, and tow package. I'm amazed! The truck has 600 miles and I'm getting 17 around town and 23 on the highway. Hope this helps, Bob.

I have a 99 Lariat 4.6 3.55ratio.
I cary about an 800lb load of construction
supplies and drive about 100 miles/day
in mostly highway. In So Cal our speeds
are rather high 70-80 the truck gets 14.5
to 15.5mpg over the last 35,000 miles.
Empty it will get 17 on occasion. It has no
spare power so if you will have a load or
tow consider the 5.4 mine is in 3rd a lot
trying to keep up. It has been a completeley
trouble free truck- no brake pads or even tires
so you will like it.

Most people in the real world get about 15-18mpg. Thats good mileage. Several people claim 20mpg with no mods.

Actual MPG with F-150

I have a '97 F-150 Supercab with a 4.6L V8 and I get a consistant 16 MPG on the highway and 14 MPG in the city. I have never gotten much over 16 or much worse than 14 (unless pulling a trailer). But also, I have NEVER gotten 18MPG.

i have 99 5.4 offroad,,,, freeflowing single exhaust and k and n filter.. in town driving fast and hard 11mph... then i randomly drive a tank very conserative and get 11.5.. funny,, so i keep drving her hard and change her oil on the 3k mark. and on the highway i drove her 55mph for a 100 then 70 for 120 miles and got 18mph,, i was impressed since i usually get 15 when i motor along the freeway doing 85 gunning thru as i pass.

Actual MPG with F-150

I have a 1999 F150 4x4 with the 4.6L V8 with automatic transmission. I just purchased it last week, and the first tank full of gas through the truck was 15.1 MPG, although calculating the estimated actual mileage due to having 285/75/16 BFG Allterrains on it versus the stock 255/75/16 goodyears, i came up with 16.0 MPG. This was all done in city/rural driving. I'm hoping for close to 20 on the highway, we'll see in a couple week when i take a longer trip.

I have a California '98 F150 with the 4.6L and 55,000 miles. With no load at all, in daily commute traffic, at about 35 mph, with little stop and go, I have gotten 12-13 mpg for the last 6 months. On a fishin' trip last week to the mountains, mostly highway at 65+ mph, I got 15.9 mpg on one tank. I am very sceptical about the 18-20 mpg claims.

I have a 1997 F150 Supercab with the tow package. I avg. 18-19 mpg driving 85 miles per day to work. I have towed my popup camper, bed loaded, four passengers, at 70 mph with AC on and got 22 mpg.

Actual MPG with F-150

I have owned a 2001 F150 supercab flareside 4x4 offroad with the 5.4 engine for a couple of month now. My average for city driving is between 17 and 19. I never really took it out on the highway except while towing a 28 foot holiday trailer in the mountains. I had overdrive turned off all the time and I got between 9 and 11 MPG. I would recommend the 5.4 over the 4.6 as I believe its either just as fuel efficent or more and you have the extra power when you need it.

Actual MPG with F-150

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-02 AT 04:02 PM (EST)]Until October, my dad drove his 2000 F150 4.6L LB Ext. cab w/ 5 spd. and 3.08 rear end apx 90 miles a day. It was clear sailing freeway coming and going as he left home around 5:30 am and came home accordingly early.
He rarely goes above 65mph, and is one of the most concious mpg guys i have ever met. He stretched it all the way to 21. When I get my hands on it, i get 19 or so. I drove it all last week in the city constantly, and ran it hard. I got nearly 16mpg.

It seems the more consistent you are with your speed the better. AC never seemed to make a difference.

Actual MPG with F-150

I have the F-150 4X4 XLT with a 4.2 litre V-6. I get 18 mpg mixed driving but I get a constant 22 mpg on the highway that is with high octane gas. I usually drive about 65 mph on the highway. I remind you that my calculations are based on canadian gallon. X03
