Has the rear end been opened here? Rear end problems are hardly unheard of.
Rebuilding the diff isn't all that hard or expensive. I bought a kit that got me the little gears and washers and that was like $150 something. Didn't replace the ring gear or drive pinion but those were pretty clean looking.
Be sure to make sure it's all clean and the axle bearings and contact surfaces on the axles are in good shape. The rear end can end up with a lot of crap in it when it blows up and it can kill the life expectancy of the new one.
