NumberDummy--Can you verify that GM used the ford 3 speed behind its HiPo engines as the "standard" tranny. Pretty sure one of my friends w/67 GTO verified that his 3 speed was a ford. You know that hurt him! The first 64 GTO I ever rode in was a 3 speed as well (Gainesville, fl). Think it was because of fire at a GM plant somewhere.
The only FIRE occured in 1953-see below.
Also recall a 3 speed OD in an old V8 Studebaker ~59 wagon. That was before I had to learn about the underneath side of cars----kinda giving away my age!!

Careful when asking the big Dummy a question, you'll get more info than you bargained for!
O/D in passenger cars in the 1960's: 1960/67 Galaxie ~ 352 engine only / 1962/67 Fairlane 221/260/289...but O/D could
not be ordered with the 289/271 HP HiPo engine = Ford 4 Speed Top Loader only.
Studebakers used B/W T-86 O/D's in passenger cars, except the Packard engined 1956 Golden Hawks, which used T-85's. 1955/56 Packards used the same transmission which is...the SAME transmission used in Galaxies, F100's 55/57 Birds, others.
The Studebaker O/D: relays, governors, solenoids, and in some cases, the kickdown switch are the same ones Ford used on various models. I typed all the comparable Studebaker/Packard/Ford part numbers a while ago.
While
no O/D parts are available from Ford, NOS O/D parts are available from Studebaker parts vendors. (The big Dummy has all the Studebaker & Packard parts catalogs = because many moons ago, prior to working as a Ford partsman, the Dummy was a Studie partsman).
The Ford 3.03 all syncro 3 speed was actually made by Borg-Warner. A similar trans was used in some GM cars.
FIRE!
In 1953, the GM Hydra-Matic factory burned to the ground. So, some 1953 Cadillac's and Olds' use the Buick Dyna-Flow trans, Pontiacs used Chevy's Power-Glide. How do you tell what trans is in 1953 Cads and Olds?
The give-away = Dyna-Flow has a Parking gear (P in the shift quadrant). No Hydra-Matic had a Park gear till the Jet-Away Hydro first offered on 1956 Cadillacs, Olds 98's. Jet-Away was optional on Olds 88's and Pontiacs. After 1956, Jet-Away was standard equipment on these three cars. Jet-Away = POS!
All 1940/55 and some 1956 Hydra-Matics have a geared reverse, so when parking, just put the H/M's shift lever there, the car won't roll = guar-an-teed.
When the Hydro factory burned down, GM moved production to the former War Production Board built factory in Willow Run, MI that was leased to FoMoCo to build B-24 bombers in WWII. Willow Run was leased to Kaiser-Frazer in 1946/53, where K-F assembled all their cars. When GM took over the factory, Kaiser production moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Willys cars and Jeeps were assembled. Kaiser bought Willys in 1952.
