Exclamation Truck won't start!

Went out to start my Bronco II, unlocked it got in and when I turned the key the lights on the dash came on but when I turned it to start the car the lights went out and a click sound was made. Any ideas on what could be wrong? I'm guessing the alternator, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for any help!

Dirty battery terminals or a dead battery. If a dead battery, then determine if defective or the alternator is not charging it. Will it jump start?

Agree.... the lights went dead because the battery is on it's last leg.... Try to jump start it, if it starts...... pull the positive (red) cable off the battery while running, if it continues to run, your alternator is good, and your battery needs to be replaced.....If you have a multimeter, do an AC voltage check.... you should read anywhere between 12-14 volts AC, if it reads like 17-18, then there is no amperage, and it is a goner.

Most people don't recommend removing the + cable while eng is running. The testing needs to be done with the voltmeter on DC scale. If alt is charging, you will read 14-15+ volts across battery terminals. If reading is in the 17v range, the regulator is defective and will overcharge the battery and boil it dry.

Okay so I tried to jump it and nothing. I let it sit and get some juice from the other car for a few minutes and tried it again, still nothing. So I let it sit for about and hour and a half and then it magically started. Forgot to mention that it is very cold where I live right now. Anyone one tell anything from this or was it just because it was cold?

Okay I haven't had any problems but I planned on getting a new alternator before this happened. So anyone have suggestions on aftermarket one?

Red face

I prefer inexpensive parts with a decent warranty, but that's just me.
