Synthetic Oil

It is darn cold this year and truck starts hard so I am going to dump my 10w-30 rotella and try a 5w-40 synthetic. What is a good brand and type for the 6 litre. Any special specs to look for? Haven't looked in the owners manual yet.

Or would you say just to run regular oil with same rating 5w-40??

thoughts?

For winter up here most run Motorcraft 0w30 or Esso XD-3 0w40 (both are CI-4). Both will work down to -40 to -45. Personally I run the XD-3 0w40. If your not in a colder part of Canada in addition to the Shell mentioned above there is Mobile 1 Delvac 5w40 and PetroCan 5w40 that are quite common.

Super08 where you at in Alberta. I'm in Dawson Creek not far from Grande Prairie.

0w30 are you having good luck with it? Anyone you now run an oil pan heater? I am not to sure about them. I have seen burnt oil in the bottom of pans when you take them off from the heaters getting to hot on the bottom of the pan.

Do you run any additives in your fuel or just how it comes off the rig?? LOL

I ran the 0/30 last year and had no problems with it. Even had to start it up at -30C once with it not plugged in with no problems. Running the XD3 this year for the extra protection when up to temp with the 40 weight and it was recommended to me by others including a Ford tech with 20 plus years experience. Never have had a pan heater, but have been curious about them as well.

Here is a link to the oil. It also has anti foaming additives to work with the PSD's HEUI injectors.

I have an virgin oil analysis done by Blackstone if you want a copy of it.

I have been running Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 motor oil for about a 15,000 miles I love it! it is a bit pricey, but I plan on keeping my truck for a very long time so its worth the extra price to me. My oil analysis with this oil has come back looking better every time. Bottom line I had the first oil change done at the dealership because it was free. They put 15w40 in, and it was the end of the winter, I notice a big difference in how hard the motor cranked over and sounded with the 15w40. (I think 10w40 came factory fill) Also the oil analysis did not look good, part of it was the motor had yet to break-in.
I do believe that other members are running shell rotella 5w40 with great results. As for ratings, the owners guide recommends CI-4 Plus. CI-4 and CH-4 is acceptable

Where are you able to find the Mobil Delvac 1 5w40? I live up in Cedar Springs and have been all over GR looking for Delvac. Stupid question that is a synthetic right. I would like to hook up with you sometime when you get your SCT and cool duals!!! Been holding off on such mod's but getting very hard to do so!!

do they carry mobil1 turbo diesel[same as delvac1 and cheaper] in the great white north? they got it at wally world and the parts stores here.

mobil and shaeffers are the best of the 5w-40's IMHO and the 6.0 lubs them!

Been to Wally World no luck, no Mobil or Delvac on 5w40 synthetic. I've been to 4 stores in the area. I guess I should check if they would order it for me. And yes Shaeffers is great oil for the 6.0, but damn it's expensive if your changing it out every 5000miles.

other have had success with having them order but talk to the manager. the schaeffers is available for 16 bucks a gallon(same as rotella syn at wally world) in bulk. if you only order 1 case like i did it will cost 20/gal(same as mobil1 at wally world) with shipping. i dont think the supreme 9000 needs to be changed at 5K either but thats another thread, another time.

Valvoline Extreme Blue 5W-40.

I've heard from vendors of 6.0s not liking Rotella as much as some other oils (more injector issues on trucks running Rotella and Motorcraft vs. the other oils).

I had no idea schaeffers was available through walmart. Gonna have to look into that. If true that's a great price.
