Faulty gasket?

How good is the ford exhaust gasket that the turbo bolts down to? I have been getting a hissing sound that is not the EBPV and noticed some smoke coming from under the turbo on startup. Got a new gasket from ford but it looks lame. Just a flat pice of steel. Hany hints on how I am going to get the bolts loose. They are rusted in pretty good.

well it is a possibilty.. but i would say it is a little bit of exhaust leaking from around where the down pipe connects... and what are you talking about when you say the exhaust gasket that the turbo bolts down to??? like the uppipes where they connect to the turbo??? and as far as i know where the turbo bolts down there is just a o-ring in there...

Downpipe is good. It looks like the leak is at the uppipe where the square gasket gose. I did get the o rings for where the pedastal bolts down to the motor thats leaking to. Are the ford o rings ok? What about the metal gasket?

That gasket, the rectangular one is made of two (2) layers of copper. If its leaking now I would just replace it rather than messing with it.

more than likely its your up-pipes leaking at the turbo. There are donut gaskets there but usually the pipe gets warn too and needs to be replaced or expanded a bit to fit correctly again. The gasket you have is the right on for the exhuast collector to turbo connection

Thanks, What do you think its going to be like getting all those exhaust bolts loose?? I got the feeling I am going to have to do some cutting. Are there any high temp sealants I could use to make sure this dose not happen a second time??

No I wouldn't try any sealant. probably wouldn't work any way. There are two other options that could be considered. IH has some bellowed up-pipes that use a bellow for the expansion rather than the donut gasket. I still haven't nailed down a part number though for our trucks. The Superduties can use them but I don't have a part number for the OBS ones.

Also I have heard that there are some new aftermarket donut gaskets that are supposed to be much better. I thought I heard Bean's had them but I can't find them on their website. Worth checking into to though.

As for the bolts they are not easy!! my pipes and gaskets were bad enough I jsut removed the turbo and slid the collector right off. so the bolts could be removed off the truck. Going back on wasn't too bad but still tight!

Do you know wat size the uppipes are? If I am going to get a tool to expand them I might have to know what size they are?

Wow! @#$%^& 800.00 for the bellow kit from International. Looks like I am going to be fixing leaks once in a while. Hey TJ, How long has it been since you fixed yours? My truck has 110000 on it and it looks like the doughnut gaskets have been replaced at least once before.

Feb 07. I will soon be taking my turbo off again to swap exhaust housings so I'll see how they have faired over the last 9 months
