Charging System Fusible Links - where are they?

This is a 2002 Powerstroke motor.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the Fusible Links in the Charging System. The schematic I have shows 3 Fusible Links E, C and D.

My alternator is not charging, I only show Battery voltage with the engine running. My Battery idiot light in the Instrument Cluster DOES NOT illuminate when the key is On or when the engine is running. Can this be a problem in the Alternator?

Can anyone tell me what fuse powers the Battery idiot light on the 2002 Super Duty Diesels.

I have a new alternator on order but want to check these "simple" things out before changing the expensive alternator.

Can anyone help?

Thanks for the prompt and complete reply F350!

I will go out and check these fuses.

I will make up a fuse jumper to test the Indicator light.

So, the defect causing the Indicator Light to not illuminate at Key On and after engine start could be in the alternator...correct?

Thanks!

Hey F350-6.

I went through your posted procedure and all the fuses checked OK.

I made up a 15 amp jumper and connected as your procedure described and when I turned on the Key Switch the Battery light lit.

Replace the generator.

I have one coming in tomorrow morning so this should be a piece of cake now.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME!

Only because of your professional style help F350-6!

Do you know the answer to my original question though..."Where are the fusible links in the charging system?" I think this would be good to know for troubleshooting the system in the future.

Thanks again!

A fusible link is usually a piece of wire in your harness. Looks like a regular piece of wire, it needs to be a certain lenght to work right.

I haven't heard of any issues with fusible links with these trucks. Without trying to trace through an entire wiring diagram I'm not sure you will find them (if they are even there) without getting lucky. When I glanced through the diagnostic section of the charging system I didn't see any reference to fusible links.

I wouldn't worry too much. Hang around FTE and you'll learn a lot about these motors. You'll also always find someone around to help you out.

Hello
i'm having a similar problem. a 2002 F350 7.3L.
just put in a new alternator, and it is not charging at all.
i did the CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR LAMP test.
and the lamp does not come on. with the key in the run position or off.
would this cause it to not charge?

the wiring pigtail can go bad that conect to the alternator
there is a Ford TSB about it, I think
the pins on alt and connector sometimes have issues.

wire harness seems fine. the light in the dash does not come on ether. the alternator that was replaced was completely dead when we took it into auto zone. it did not pass any test.
and now the new one has no output at all. but the light in the dash doers not light up. i tested it by running a wire to the neg on the bat as suggested above and still nothing on the light.

Had a similar problem on 99 350SD. Fuse links to the 3 pin connector were opened. Powered the connector from the Battery Pos. No parasitic drain, vehicle charges. Good enough for me- probably not the right way to fix it, but I was not going on a search and destroy mission to try to find the fuse links.
