Does any one elses truck seem to take longer to shift into overdrive when it is cold? Mine seems to take longer when cold than when the truck is warmed up. Is this normal?
From my understanding, yes this is normal. The computer has a "cold" program in it, that is designed to lenghten the time of shifts in the trans in order to warm up the engine faster. This should occur until the coolant temp reaches about 100 degrees. Its actually in your owners manual about this feature, and that it is normal in cold weather. Check it out.
Almost all vehicles will not shift into OD until a certain temperature is reached. I've had a lot of different brands and they were all that way. It has something to do with the emissions.
Well it was 9° this morning so I did a little experiment to refresh my mind.
The shifts do happen farther apart but it does shift into overdrive. The torque converter doesn't lock up until the trans builds some temperature. This is on my 06.
