What year was the best 2WD BII chassis?

What year had the best rear axle and transmission(man or auto) and engine and suspension and frame and sway-bars and brakes?

Or is there an optimal group of parts I should start collecting from the w-yards?

I guess I'm looking for the best heavy duty combo?

(I want to put a lot of hp and torque into it and I will lighten the body a lot, so the body doesn't really apply here, although I might swap trans to match whatever engine I decide on and then cut up the body)

I've never owned or driven or worked on a BII ever but the small wheelbase appeals to me.

tbolt 460 is starting off with a positive reputation.
swap in the 91/94 xplorer axles in it. the front(D35) is a bolt in.If your gonna make 4X4(there is one bracket that has to be changed). as far as the rear goes a 8.8 from a xplorer or a 9in from a Early bronco. either one you have to move the spring pads

The Bronco II stayed basiclly unchanged for its whole run in regards to axle, engine, and transmission strengths.

Personally, I think the 84-85 have the most potential if you live with emissions checking and 25 years old don't need it. Plus, a 302/C-4 swap is doable.

In cold weather, the EFI 2.9L might have an edge.

The best thing to do is put Explorer 4x4 axles into it. Or just swap the 4.0 and complete drivetrain into it.

I want to keep it 2WD and was thinking didn't the explorers have a 9in rear with disc brakes? Are they wider? Forgot to ask, did the BII ever come with rear coil springs?
