I bought an Edge today. It really changes the way the truck drives. I have it at level 2 right now with a few minor custom changes and I am very happy. No pinging on 87 octane either.

I couldn't help myself so I tweaked a few parameters and went out for a drive tonight to "get a gallon of milk". Took me about an hour.

I've never owned a fast car before, and I know a 4.6L aint fast, but this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that will throw you back into the seat and give your stomach a mild case of that weird sick feeling.

(If I had anything faster I'm sure I'd lose my license.)

I wish I had done a 0-60 test stock. I'm not too good at launching because I've never needed to practice it before, but I got in an 8 second 0-60 tonight with a lot of wheelspin that may have cost me a few tenths. I know that isn't fast in the grand scheme of things but it makes me happy. My truck has never spun the tires before, and certainly not upon command.

My tune thus far is level 2 and the following custom changes:

1-2, +5 shift, +2MPH, 4750RPM WOT
2-3, +5 shift, +5MPH, 4750RPM WOT
3-4, +5 shift, +10MPH, 4750RPM WOT
Rev limit 5250, WOT fuel 1.5, Timing -1, 87 octane

Max values: ECT 196, RPM 5040, IAT 74, TFT 164

Obviously a very conservative tune. All I want is no pinging, firmer shifts, neat gauges, no throttle lag and a higher set point for OD. I think I have it now.

I trolled around a few of the hills in my area that used to drive me bananas due to abrupt downshifts or hanging onto OD too long, and everything was much better. I pulled some of the steeper hills without struggle in OD at 45MPH (1300RPM). Usually that is ping city for me. In the past I have resorted to locking out the OD around town, but now I don't have to do that.

I doubt I will get better mileage because I'm having way too much fun.

For most of the drive I kept an eye on the spark value. I have no idea what is a good number for it but I dont think it ever went over 40.

That looks like a god tune. I had the edge and loved it but when I changed the tune the least bit my truck went haywire. They said my truck was compatible but I know it was acting up.

lmao

You have hit the nail on the head.

BTW, with my tune I had plugged into the Edge the Fiancee and I drove up to Austin from Houston Friday.

Best mileage I was able to turn out according to the edge and fuel calc was 18.2 mpg at 72 mph. So all in all I am happy with it.

The only thing I can tell you is that in the summer you might have a problem with your tranny fluid temp squawking at you at that low of a temp. Mine normally goes up to about 180 or so depending on traffic conditions. Of course, with it being rainy and a bit on the cool side (never higher than 36 deg on the drive) TFT never got above 155 deg.

Remember, you play with it too much, it will fall off!

Get the 5.4L, trust me. I had a 4.6L before and the power differences are on totally different levels. Besides, you may actually burn up the transmission or the motor after a while using the 4.6L because of the lack of power.

Okay...the 4R70 was the transmission that was originally used with the 5.4, or so I thought...plus it was the same tranny, in shape as well as form, with my old 92 Bronco with a 351 Windsor...after all its an AOD with fancy stuff on it so I wouldn't worry too much about burning it up.

As has been stated time and again, the 4.6 and a 4R70 can do just fine...even towing, if you have the right diff gears to go with it. I am getting a little weary of everyone around here thinking that the 4.6 is a "car engine" in a truck.

What was the 265 Chevy? What was the 260 Ford SB?

Cripes, there are 350 and 351 engines sitting in duallys that pull alot of horses and hay that I know of, and they aren't too close to my HP and TQ figures in my 4.6, but hey, its a car engine and can't pull a greasy string out of a cats 6 o'clock.

It is really starting to get old, guys. Give it a rest.

the 08's use normal spark plugs from what's being reported. the 06's still used the crappy design.

dude, relax. I can't believe you are still stewing on my comment. was it the one in this thread or one in an older thread?

I agree. and those 3/4 and 1 tons weigh in the same as the current F-150 or less. My truck tops 6,000 lbs most days (weighed it myself). I've had several Mustangs with the 4.6 personally and a buddy in Seattle let me compare his 4x2 4.6 SuperCrew against my 4x4 5.4 Supercrew (same years).

And the 4.6 truck deserves every comment about the lack of power I've ever posted. The truck 4.6 is the same motor as the Mustang 4.6...I couldn't tell a difference between them at all. Same power curve, virtually no torque down low...and loves to rev high before you get into the power band. The 5.4 starts at idle and tapers off about 4,000 rpm. The 4.6 starts about 2,000 rpm and runs to about 4,500 rpm. Peak TQ just isn't where you need it or where it belongs for a Truck. That is why I base my comment that the 4.6 belongs in cars only.

My last F-150 (1994 with 5.0) weighed about 4200 lbs and I personally think it was faster than my current F-150. But it was rather anemic in low rpms...and honestly it was old. It did gEt the job done with 225 hp...and I never had an issue with lack of power. there was lots of room for improvement however. The day after I bought it, I was wishing I had gotten the 351.

You can never go wrong with getting the bigger motor. And I've never understood that theory that the smaller engine gets better MPG. I've personally never found that to be true. My 98 F-150 with 4.2 got 15 mpg highway. My 06 can/has gotten 20+ highway.

sorry for the long post.

Doesn't the 4.6 and the 5.4 use the same transmission the 4R75E?

I am currently saving for the newer style ford (04-08) and in the dilema of the 4.6 or 5.4. I am trying ot find one under 50k so I can just change the sparkplugs and then not have to worry about it for another 50k (which I wouldn't put on for 4 years anyways). I plan on doing medium to light towing of 4 wheelers and tractors, and plan on using the 4wd while going through mud and snow with a load behind me.

Hopefully with the way gas prices are going up and the fact the newer model 2009 will be out in august I can get a kickass deal on one.

Any suggestions on aftermarket such as Cold air and tuners. I hear SCT is pretty damn good and so is the edge but the 4.6 is lacking in total power adders vs the 5.4.

The 4.6 uses the 4R70E, the 5.4 uses the 4R75E. The 4.6 is a very good motor, but my 5.4 has much more grunt, so I could never be convinced that they feel the same. I have driven both and there is no compairing the two engines. My heavy FX4 w/ 18's gets around 13 mpg stop and go, and I have gotten a high of 18.2 mpg on highway trips, all hand calculated. And this is running a Diablo Sport Preditor Programmer. My friend's 2000 Reg. Cab 4x4 Off Road Flare Side w/ a 5 speed barely can get the same MPG's.
