Exclamation 4X4 trouble shifting from 4H to 4L

My 4wd has been having trouble shifting from 4wd to 2wd. When it started it would shift back when stoped and wiggled the 4wd shift lever. Now it sometimes won't shift into 2 at all. If i park it for the night when its been stuck in 4 its allways back to 2 the next day. I've never had a problem shifting from 2 to 4, just 4 to 2. I would like to know why its doing this and what I can do to fix the problem. Thanks.

PS. I have a '97 F 150 4x4 off road; floor shift and automatic hubs.

First, get up under the truck and spray down the linkages with WD40 or PB Blaster.

Next, when you are actually using it put it in neutral and roll just a little while operating the lever. This made shifting my 2000 F150 much easier to and from all ranges.

Yeah a buddy of mine has a 98 F150 4wd with manual transfer case, he couldn't even move the shift lever. I got underneath the truck and checked things out. It turns out the shift linkage was completely froze up, I removed it from the truck, broke it free, took everything apart, cleaned and greased it up, reassembled the linkage and hooked it back up under the truck... works like a champ!
