84 alternator in 75 pickup

OK heres is the story bear with me.. I have a 1975 crew cab short box ford f250 4x4 that had a 360 gas engine in it..
I removed the original engine, and installed a 1984 6.9 diesel engine in it with all the accessories..
I used the factory wiring in the 75 to hook to the 84 alternator.. but there are 2 push on wires that go to tha back of the alternator with caps on them, im not sure if i am hooking them to the right ones.. because when i run the truck with the regulator plugged in i have no charging.. and the regulator gets hot.. wondering (the reg is from the 75 also) what i could be doing wrong.. all these things worked before i did the engine swap and i have not altered much on the entire 75 ford harness..
Also does anyone kno0w hot to remove the amp meter from the wiring? i have a volt gauge im using instead hooked up..

Thanks

Ray

Take a close look at your alternator.

Some of the later alternators have a built in regulator (E73Z-10316-A - Motorcraft GR-784). It's a small black plastic device that bolts to the rear of the alternator.

The 75 will have a "field F" hook up and a "stator S'' hook up. Do not use the stator wire. its for the old choke. all you need on the alternator is the field and the charge wire. You will also make the stock regulator hot and burn it up if the alternator is more than a 60 amp unit.

i think its 60 amp.. mayeb i shoudl use the regulator for the 84 instead of the 75 one.. the 75 regulator has 3 long looking things on the back of it.. and if you dont ground it when its plugged in and runing it makes this click click click noise...

Are the terminals labeled on the 84 alternator? If so, what do they say? Also, what are the color wires going to the alternator in the 84 harness? We know what you have in the 75, but still unclear what exact alternator you have in the 84, so we need the info.

The white/black goes to the stator terminal. If yours is black, just make sure the same black wire goes to the "s" on the regulator.

The orange wire goes to the field. You should have an orange wire on the "f" terminal of the regulator.

How do you figure that ?

The Motorcraft V/R application number is the same for all non-integral VR alternators.

GR-540A

This includes 100 amp alts.. (not shown below)

Easiest Fix

If you are willing to spend a few bucks on a new alternator I would suggest buying a "self-exciting" model. These only have one wire and that goes directly to the positive side of the battery and you're done. I went to this on both of my trucks and couldn't be more pleased. Jegs has a great looking chrome one that is a 100 amp model for a little over $100. Otherwise your local auto parts supplier can set you up with one.

thanks guys i hooked the orange push on connector wire to the field terminal and its WORKING!! left the other wire off the STA terminal since i dont need a choke.. 13.47 volts at idle! i didnt check the amps with my clamp on though.. also put the regulator in out of the 84 ford,,

thank you guys...

im just gonna tape the STA terminal wire back on the harness out of the way
