78 F250 E4OD install questions

I am wanting to upgrade my C6 to an E4OD. The truck is a 78 F250 Crewcab 460 2WD. I have to to workout the speedo cable in the tailhousing and the steering column shifting. There seems to be no problem getting a computer for it. I do need to know what year E4OD still used a speedo cable as opposed to the electronic speed sensor. I think the original column will work but not have access to anything but drive and overdrive. I can move the tranny crossmember and the driveshaft will need to be shortened. I mainly need to know what year E4OD has the best internals and what year I'm limited to. I have diesel buddy that wants to put in a diesel 4R100 with some Trans-dapt adapter and an electronic speed sensor converter or something like that. The 4R100 is for the diesel so a starter adapter needs to be used. I want to keep this as simple and economical as possible. I don't think the 4R100 fits my "keep it simple" program. Is it possible to upgrade the early case with the good internals from the newer units ? The engine is a 78 466cid pretty mild but makes right at 285hp. It has a mild Voodoo cam, ported D3VY heads, Hedman Elites, and Performer intake with a 750 Holley. It wieghs 4800 lbs according to the registration. I know someone on here has done this before. I did a search but did not see my application.
Thank's in Advance

That's the hard way to do it. The E4OD can be upgraded to the diesel 4R100 internals. You can make the E4OD much stronger than you'll ever need.

I know someone that has a built E4OD for a 460 that he's like to sell since he no longer has a 460 truck....

The speedo cable was used up until 1992, but the stronger E4OD's were either made after 1994 or rebuilt after then. So your best best would be to get a rebuilt E4OD that was done with all the upgraded parts.

Thank's for the replies, It looks like I need to start out with a 91 transmision to achieve my goal.
Blue beast thats a really cool website with tons of information but unfortunatly it pertains to the smaller passenger car and light truck AODE or 4R70W. I will keep that as a reference to my next project, a 65 F100 with a 351 and an AOD.
I appreciate all the help ! ! !

I'll have to ask. He's out of town right now, it might take a couple days. And the trans is in Michigan, so shipping might be expensive.
