Cleveland, not Ohio!

I have the opportunity to buy a 351 Cleveland from a friend of mine. I was told it would bolt up to a C4 transmission. I also know the Cleveland is taller. Does anyone know if the motor mounts are the same as the 289,302 351W? In otherwords, if I pull my 289, will the 351C drop in without changing anything?

You might want to talk to Randy Jack. He is running a 351C in his.

I had one in a 72 gran torino Sport. I always thought they had a FMX behind them. Hopefully, somone else will know for sure.

What is the Ford ID code from the C4 transmission you are using? This is necessary information to see whether your transmission is compatible with a 351C engine. The ID code is on the left side of the case, above the manual control lever.

Some 351C's used C6's, some 351C's used FMX's and some 351C's used C4's.

351C's were never installed in any year Ford F Series truck, Econoline or Bronco. 1970/74 passenger cars only.

The 1977/79 351M/400 equipped F Series trucks used the same engine mount stands as a 302 did from 1973/79.

What engine mount stands are you using in your truck?

No F Series truck ever used a 289, and no F Series truck used a 351W till 1980. The 302 was used in 1969/72 F100's and 1973 and later F100/F250's.

I am running a 351c with my C4, but my engine is mounted on my cross member of my Jag front end , You may have to change your engine mounts because there is a difference between the two motors, one is wider than the other,The cleveland motor was used in F series trucks in Australia until 1980, as my motor came out of a ambulance built in the late 70's.

It should fit where a 302/351W goes. Motor mounts are the same. The C4 will bolt up, just make sure you have the proper balance for the flexplate. The only physical difference is the taller deck which puts the heads outboard a little more. For a truck, you'll want 2v heads for better low-end torque. Great motor, and the 335 series forum on this site has all the info you'll ever need....there's some smart guys/gals over there....me not included.

Only issue will be oilpan clearance..you will have to look as far as your nearest Bronco to get the right one

In '73 I owned a '72 Ranchero GT that had a 266 HP 351C in it. (man was that thing fast) I know it wasn't an F series but it was a ford truck. At least we used it for a truck most of the time.It was also an automatic I but don't recall which one.

I have an aluminum bellhousing for a 351C w/FMX that's been laying around my shed for 7 yrs, if you need it. I don't think you could adapt a C-4 to it though, the FMX bolted up to it like a 4-sp manual, with 4 bolts.

Thanks for the info and the generous offer Albuq. I posted this in the engine swap section and they said that the engine mounts the same but I would need the correct flex plate to mount to the engine? There are two different types?
Numberdummy- I havent' had a chance to check the numbers on my transmission, but I know it's a 68 C4- either out of a Mustang or Cougar, if that helps. It would be nice if that Cleveland went in without any problems.

Any C-4 should bolt up to a cleveland, a true cleveland, and if the C-4 came from behind a 302/351w or 300 6 cyl. There are small bell housing C-4's (usually from behind mustang II's) which would require smaller torque converters and the smaller flexplate. Keep in mind that the flexplate needs to have the correct balance for that engine. I don't remember if the motor mounts are the same but the mount to perch location is the same, meaning if you had a 302 with motor mounts to a truck and you had a 351c with motor mounts to the same truck it would drop right in. And if you already have a tranny in there it should mate right up to it, spacing, bolt pattern and all. While they are wider than the 302/351w the exhuast ports angle downward where the 302/351w point out, this gives you better opportunity for room/clearence in most cases. I have a B&M shift kit to a 68 C-4, the 68 and maybe the 69 C-4s are *******s, 70 and later internals are different, I didn't use it and you are welcome to it for $20 plus shipping if you want it.

go Windsor, same displacement, but the cleaveland is heavier and harder to get parts for

but its your truck, get what you want. and im fairly sure the 289/302/351W motor mounts differ from the 351c, i think its the same as the 427, but dont hold me to that

351C engine mounts are not the same as a 427 or any other FE engine.

Ed, I have a 351C in my 55, it will not direct bolt to your current configuration. Motor mounts can be found easily but I would caution you with the drop axle you are running you will have clearance issues to deal with between the axle and the cross support that equalizes the motor mounts. I have already modified mine and am getting ready to do it again as soon as I get her painted. Otherwise I love my cleveland motor, runs strong and uses alot of gas,LOL, hightest only..... 2v or 4v heads?
