2009 F150 diesel

First if the picture on the other post is correct, I for one am waiting for 2009. When it comes to the diesel what kind of hp torque and mpg does everyone think we will see and what kind of #'s does everyone want to see.

This is what I want

horsepower 300
torque 500
mpg 25 (in town)

What I have heard

horsepower 330
torque 550
mpg 18-20 (in town)

25 MPG in town isn't going to happen...that is 4 cylinder mid-size car territory.

18-20 MPG in town is excellent for a 3 ton truck.

With diesel sitting right now at $3.80 a gal. it does not matter what the mpg is the 5.4 is a better deal, unless a person is towing about 90% of the time!!

agreed... wish the V10 was an option in the F150... that'd be fun

not true, i have talked to guys with a 7.3L and the 6.0L powerstrokes and they say they get 20 to 25 in town. one guy said he gets 17 while towing a 34ft comper. the thing now it the emissions stuff they have to put on them which is killing them. i hear the new 6.4L is only getting like 17 in town or less.

I totally agree. The lower fuel efficiency with emission controls and the higher processing cost of low sulphur diesel has made diesels less competitive. My guess is we're probably 10-15 years away before technology improvements will increase fuel efficiency or reduce the cost of diesel fuel to the point where it will be as competitive versus gasoline as it was in the late '90s.

yeah it seems like a crazy idea for Ford to create this new diesel for the F150 just about the time that diesel is 50cents more then gas

exactly, i ahve ran a tank of E85 in my F150, i noticed a power gain, some people say it gets less mpg, but i didnt lose enough to make a differnce. bio diesel is the way to go but the stations are not all over yet, just like the E85. the E85 i bought was 30 cents cheaper than gas which is almost enough for me to make a special trip to get it. closest station is about 10 miles from me.

emission question

Does anyone know if the f150 has to conform to the same emissions as the f250 and up or can they have less crap choking the motor since they are in a lighter weight class. It would be nice if they could go a different direction rather than that dpf and dealing with regens and all that crap.

These are not even close figures. Most full size diesel trucks wont break 20mph highway, let alone in town. I am on my second 7.3L (238,000 miles) and my dad has a small fleet (7) 6.0L's. 18 highway is about the best, unless you can drive a max of 55mph; then you might knock on 20's. In town is around 13-15.

Yes, it will have all of this garbage. The VW TDI took some time off to incorporate this junk on their small cars. It is either regens or Urea injection systems. Both are terrible.

Trust this...it's BS!
I have a 7.3 3-speed c6 no OD
12-14 local (tops), high teens hwy under 65 mph.
OD will give maybe 22 hwy. but that will be under 2000 rpm, and NOT towing (great engines non the less!)

you have a C6, which is a trans my grandfather built when ford was making it. he said they stopped making it cause it was not an efficant trans. its been YEARS since the C6 was built. the newer trucks are way better. the trans they started with was the E4OD cause it was better on fuel. now it is called the 4R70W, unless they changed it again. they were/are built at sharronville ohio plant and lavonia michigan.

I have been on the 6.0L board since 05 and I consistently report some of the best fuel mileage. I get 19 to 20 on a pure highway tank (running empty), 13 to 14 mpg on a pure city tank and about 12 pulling a fairly light trailer down the highway (5 to 6000 lbs). NOBODY that I have seen in the past couple of years has reported anything near 25 mpg on the highway and NOBODY with any credibility has claimed anything much over 15 on a pure city tank. So 20 to 25 in town is BS.

The 6.4L is getting less on mileage - more emissions crap. If you do some research on that board you'll see it's probably the top complaint and you'll see numbers of 10 to 15 mpg. I don't think anyone there claims 17 in the city and most are lucky to get that on the highway.

I'm anxiously waiting for the F150 diesel. But I'd bet 23 to 24 will be the best highway number and probably 16 to 17 in town at best. That would be fine with me.
