Gas engine oil pres. gauge:

V8. Oil Pressure Gauge. When I am driving the gauge is right on. When I stop (like at a light) the gauge goes down all the way.
Anyone have an idea?

Thanks,
Larry

Hmmm... I'll have to think about that one. I'll ask my nephew who is going to school at Milford, maybe he can help.

It is an electric or mechanical gauge? If it's electric there could be something wrong with the sending unit........If it were me I'd get a good mechanical gauge on there and see what the oil pressure is actually doing at idle.......obviously your oil pressure increases (or decreases) as engine speed increases (or decreases, respectively).......

My $.02

Could be cheap or worn out oil or bad bearings. How many miles are on it and what motor is it?

Well he hasn't replied back yet, but yes......if indeed the oil pressure is low bad bearings are the most likely cause of that..........(after all the simple stuff.....you know )

additional info.

Have checked the actual oil pressure and it is fine. Replaced the sending unit and the results were that it reversed the reading. When idle it reads hi and cruising it reads low. The oil is changed regularly with premium oil.

Glad to hear everything is OK......you don't need those kind of problems. It's a bit weird to me that it reads higher at idle than going down the road.......I guess I just don't understand how that would be possible.....(idle=low rpm=oil pump pumping less........cruise=higher rpm=oil pump pumping more.....). Come to think of it, the "oil pressure gauge" in my '98 never moves at all, it's more like an idiot light with a picture. I know how much the pressure in my '69 changes (just over 80 when cold, 20 at hot idle, 55-60 at cruise).

That is wierd. Is there any chance that wires were swapped?

Found out that a fitting for the power steering was leaking. this fitting was right above the sending unit. Somehow this drip was interfering with the readings sent to the oil gage. I am waiting for a new power steering hose to be ordered. I will let you know how this turns out.

It is a set plug in unit. So it could only fit in one way.
