Good buy?

Hi, new to this site. I have stumbled across a 1989 Ford F250 extended cab 460 4X4 with 3speed auto. One owner and get this 29,000 miles. It looks brand new. Are there any issues with 460's from 1989 and with 3 speed auto trannies? I have not been able to find much about 1989 vintage so don't know if there were issues. Someone said they had a poor exhaust design. What are alternatives for exhausts. thanks for your time. jadmt

That's a great truck, big hauling capacity and at 29k it's just broken in. The only downside with this powertrain combo will be the fuel milage.. single digits only with a best case hwy cruising rate of 10-11mpg unloaded at 60mph max.

The 460 is a low reving motor that lasts a real long time with up keep. The 2 speed auto is a solid tranny that had been around for years .Keep it around 55 MPH and expect 10 on a good day . Better and you r ahead.

Thanks for the replies. I am not too worried about mpg as it will not be my main transportation. Just a 2nd vehicle and something to put a camper on. I just want to make sure that 1989 vintage 460's and 3 speeds don't have any known issues. I originally was looking for an early vintage ie 77-79 as I bought a 78 f150 new back in 1977 and have always been partial to that body style even tho I had a 1996 and a 2002 F150. If there are no issues I don't think I can go wrong for $5000.00. That is higher than blue book but at 29,000 miles and still like new interior and exterior it seems like a very good buy.

that sounds like too much for an 89 regardless of the miles.

are you positive that they are correct?

go to your state license agency and make sure.

it is a buyers market and i say around $3000 sounds closer to what it should go for.

positive of the miles as I know the owners son. Elderly owners that bought it with the intent of 5th wheeling around the country but unfortunately their health failed before the could live their dream. I know it is priced kind of high but it is show room new in and out.

Depends on the area . If no nice trucks r found he get the price. A rusted out 4x4 with 100000 miles x2 is $1500 up here .

You don't get much in 4X4's for under 5000. Even POS are 3500. For what it is I think 5000 is a good price. I checked nada and the were at 5900 for clean retail and this is beyond clean.

well I bought it for 4800. It seems to be a heck of a nice truck. Very clean and runs and drives like new. First thing I am going to do is get a different exhaust. I don't want loud tho as at 65 mph it all ready seems like it is geared too low. It has a 3:55 rear end. I would have guessed it was a 4:10 by how it feels at highway speeds but the door sticker says otherwise.
