Trouble Code Question

Here is a question for everyone......I have a 96 F-450 with a 7.3 Diesel and a E4OD Transmission and Grearvendor under/overdrive.

I am getting a blinking overdrive light and no check engine light. The codes come up P603 and P1723.

P0603 = PCM KEEP MEMORY ALIVE (KAM) ERROR
P1723= TRANSMISSION SLIP

Are the two codes connected?
Is the touque converter sliping?

I can reset the blinking light by disconnecting the battery and can avoid the blinking light by turning off the ford overdrive. I can still use the Gearvendor overdrive.

1723 is your only concern..

603:

Sometimes a chip will set it also....

The slip code can come from the gearvender.
Is it installed as an under or an over drive.

The E4OD does not have sensor for TC slipping.
The code can only be set with trans operating in OD.
The PCM looks at motor RPM and truck speed. If the #'s do not addup it sets the slip code.

Thank you for your information. I have taken the GV out of the loop and I still get the code P1728 driving the truck without the GV.....Your advice on the P0603 makes since as I have disconnect the battery to clear the code. My code reader will not read the codes with the truck off. I went to a local trans shop which read the codes for me.

The question now would be.....is the transmisson slipping? I have checked the speed sensor on the diff. and it is working correctly. Could low fluid cause this problem as the the light will only start blinking when I go up a hill for a period of time (say 15-20 seconds) with or without a load after I have engauged the standard overdrive. Could be the PCM be the problem and if so how would I check that....?

It is tempting to hit it with hammer...but I don't think that will work.

Again thank for you for your comments.

It's the torque converter. You need a new one.

They often develop a crack in the apply piston which allows pressure to bypass the piston. This reduces the pressure on the torque converter clutch, so it slips. It only takes 50 RPM of slip to set a P1728 code. Once it starts slipping the heat glazes the friction material on the clutch, and it slips more. And the the cracks tend to grow, further reducing the apply pressure.

It will not code with OD cancled. The E4OD can only test itself for slip at speed in OD.
The slip code can come from anything from the TC to the VSS.
My money would be on the TC.

I will change the converter.
