Sniper Rifles

Druganovs are a very nice rifle, I wouldnt have minded bringing this one back with me.
7.62x54R, longest military cartridge in continuous service. I shoot it in my 1891 Mosin Nagant, thats another rifle that saw sniper service. Took the lives of many Germans in WWII in the hands of Russian snipers.

They are worth it though, they are a fearsome rifle. when everyone else was still using bolt actions with limited capacities, the Russians had a highly accurate rifle capable of delivering a larger volume of fire. They are nearly as reliable as an AK and will never let the shooter down when it comes to accuracy. Many US soldiers in Iraq have gone up against a Druganov and lost. I wouldnt want to be with in a mile of a skilled user with an SVD.

I bought a Rem 700 VLS a few years ago to build into something "special". Stuck a Leupold M1 Tactical LR 4.5-12 scope on it, glass bedded the receiver, floated the bbl, and a trigger job. I got the lesser expensive stock because I plan to put a McMillan A-5 stock on it (I only need about $700 in case anyone wants to donate to my worthy cause). It shoots .35 MOA with my handloads. IMO, you cant go wrong with a 700 and a heavy barrel.

I used to shoot a lot of High Power Rifle competition (years ago).
What a kick in the pants!!!!
Of course, that's all open-sights.
Since I scratched my right eye and have 'clouding' similar to cataracts, I don't see as well, so, I have to use optical sights for long range.
But, as one elderly guy at my sportsman's club says, "Just put one blur on top of the other blur and squeeze the trigger!"
It's "H" "E" double hockey sticks, getting old.

Out of the rifles I have, I still enjoy shooting the M1 on open sights the best. My father got it from his father. When I was born, he bought another one and when I was old enough, we rebuilt it ground up together.
I can remember being 11 or 12 trying to hold it up and stay steady with that heavy gun while standing. Even to this day it gets a little heavy after a few clips...

for long range shots I use a custom rifle built off of a mouser frame in 300 ultra mag with the mouser bolt action " the finest bolt action made". the K98k rifle was bought for 200.00 and the gunsmithing work was about 2500.00, not bad for a custom tack driver. for all around deer hunting I shoot a browning A-bolt in 270 WSM this is a killer new variation of the good old 270 and man is it fast and accurate!!

As far as having fast shooting sniper rifles, as opposed to bolt action, you miss the point of being a sniper. 1 round at a 1000 yards, one kill. That is the sniper motto. There are folks who can do this in a heart beat so to speak. I have seen it done! I saw it done with a modified Remington 700 bdl., in 270 caliber. The three guys never even saw it coming. One second your alive, the next second your head explodes!

One shot, One kill. Thats the motto, but with the way modern warfare goes (urban environments) The low capacity of bolt action rifles can be detrimental to a sniper and the people he is trying to protect. If a sniper has a high capacity rifle that is capable of the same (or nearly) accuracy, why not? the M110 (Armys new sniper rifle, replacing M24 (based on remington 700)) should have either a 10 or 20 rnd capacity. That just provides a sniper with the ability to remove 10 or 20 people from existence in rapid succession with out needed to reload 2 or 4 times.
The benefits of this are tremendous when he is providing cover for his fellow soldiers, and I am sure that they appreciate the ability of their sniper to remove targets at a much faster speed.
