i thought e85 was very clean, why would it result in dirty oil?

Yes, I find it very hard to believe that there is dirtier oil when using E85. Everything I've read says that the emissions are much lower with E85, so the oil should stay cleaner if the engine is burning cleaner.

The FFV 5.4 is not standard. It is a no cost option over the gas only 5.4, as was mentioned previously. Also, you should NEVER use E85 in a vehicle or engine not designed for it.

To correct another notion, because of the FFV tuning of Ford vehicles there is a 5% increase in horsepower when using E85 in them. It is very possible that the first poster could feel a performance improvement of 15 horsepower. Oddly, other Manufacturers of FFV vehicles don't post an improvement in HP.

I dont know if the difference is the rating method or what, but besides that article, I keep finding in the 1teen range.

This wiki says 116 for E100 and 105 for E85.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

These say 1teens.

I'm still waiting for an e85 station in my area. I searched for FFV rated truck specifically to run E85. I may not run it if I am taking a road trip. I'm one of those guys that want to go there non-stop if possible. However, my sub 3yr old probably wont let that happen now. On gasoline, I can get 575 miles out of my tank. I bought the 35 gallon tank for that reason.

Wow, 575miles out of a 35 gallon tank! Is that highway driving? I'm averaging 13.5 mpg on gasoline in combined driving. Pretty depressing! I also searched for a FFV 5.4 and there is a (60 miles away) station that I'm going to try for Ethanol next weekend when I go Christmas shopping. I'm sure the fuel economy will be even more dismal with E85 but at least the majority of the cost of the fuel will stay in the US!

if good old president ronald would have stuck with, i think it was jimmy carters energy plan, and not done away with it, we would have been totally energy independant now.

100% stock absolutely no performance/engine/drivetrain mods. I have calculated several tanks and come up with the same thing. I drive with the cruise on and 11 months out of the year the A/C on. My dad has a 2wd 04 scab and gets similiar (slightly better). I calculate my mileage almost every tank even though I dont trend it. I have 11.5k miles on my truck. If I drive a 50/50 mix of hwy/city, I dont see hardly 14. Pure rural highways (stop and go) 45-55 mph and the more than occasional stop light, 11 mpg. Towing round trip, loaded one way, unloaded the next 72 loaded, 75-80 unloaded but with trailer 11.6 mpg.

I do my best to get consistent amounts of fuel in the tank by nozzle regulation, but thats mostly a guess since I dont weigh the fuel each time.

My '05 4.6, edge on level 2, AFE intake, hard tonneau cover and @ 70mph gets 18.3 .... the one any only time I run a tank of high-protein fuel and edge on 3 she got 19.8 @ 70/75mph.... thats why I was thinking about the use of E85 so I could scoot up to level 3 permanently........
