p0171 & p0174 correct parts?

I have a 2000 ranger 4.0L 4x4 with 104k miles. My CEL came on and I pulled these codes. After some searching/reading I have found out that the 4.0 tends to have problems with the intake mainfold gaskets. I just want to know if I am getting the right parts from Autozone. If not could someone point me in the right direction. I was going to have the valve cover gaskets replaced anyway since the driver side valve cover seems to be leaking near the firewall. Any thing else near by/in the area I should have worked on/replaced while my truck is under the knife?

Thanks in advance

Had the same codes on a 98, Lean on both sides, truck ran fine though and the codes disappeared after cleaning the maf sensor that got some oil on it. If the maf hasnt been cleaned that might be your problem jsut pick up a can of contact/electrical parts cleaner at the parts place,

I did that already and cleared the codes and they came back about 50 miles later.

Was your MAF oily again after the cleaning. A bad PCV can soak your intake and MAF with oil.

MAF was not oily, looked clean, the first time around and I changed the PCV about a 2 months ago.

Those parts look like the correct ones, however I got mine from the dealer, and the actual manifold gasket was one large piece that covered the lifter valley. Is your 4.0L the OHV or the OHC? Just curious.
One thing you may want to check before starting this job is your heater valve. On the heater hose leading into the cab there is a plastic valve with a vacuum hose on it. Mine was very brittle and I was not aware until I tried to remove the hose and it crumbled. Check this before you start because all of the parts stores in my area had to order it next day. Kind of a pain to have replaced all of the gaskets and not be able to test it because your heater line is off.
Another question, did it just set the CEL, or did you notice any issues with it running rough? Mine would stumble on cold mornings and then run fine after warming up. I actually ignored mine for about a year and noticed no ill effects on my truck. It has near 170,000 miles on it now.

I don't know if its OHV or OHC but how do I find out? I started to get the codes about a year ago. I was told to change the O2 sensors and the codes went away for awhile. The truck ran okay but the codes would come back about once a month. As time passed the codes came up more and more often to the point that they come on between 50 to 100 miles after being cleared. Within the last month the truck runs rough in the mornings and settles down once it warms up. After reading a lot of threads about these codes, the 4.0L intake gasket issues and 104k miles I just thought replacing the gaskets would solve the problem. I changed the heater value awhile back since the old one had been leaking.

The '00 4.0L Ranger is OHV. Use good quality gaskets. See: Replacing Upper Engine Gaskets on the Ford 4.0L OHV

Rockledge is right, you do need to use good quality gaskets. I was glad to see that your symptoms were the same as mine. I have not had the CEL light since I changed the gaskets. I am not sure if the dealer I got my parts from cut me a deal or not, but they were around $60 when I got them.

Thanks for all the info guys. I forgot to say that I was not going to do the job myself. I am a teacher by trade. I do all the simple stuff myself but this I would have someone else do. I do plan to make sure to get the gaskets from the local Ford dealer. $60? Not bad since Autozone wanted like $90. At least I have something to go by when getting the gaskets. I just wish I had known about this forum when I had my 91 XLT Explorer.
