I'm sure there are some of you out there who use your trucks for hauling...I've heard it called "hotshot hauling". Can anyone tell me more about how to get into this type of business....Licenses, insurance, how to find hauling jobs, ect? I got my F-450 a few months back and use it a bit for my business but I'd really like to put it to use and make some money with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
You'll need a CDL license, DOT #, commercial insurance, and your own trailer usually. There are several brokers and websites that can help you find hot shot loads, but the easiest thing to do might me stop by your local truck stops and try and find a hot shot driver to talk to.
You'll also need a cb for directions in and out of yards, etc., so if you don't have one now, you might start with getting a cb, then you can ask any hotshot driver you see going down the road some questions about where he gets his loads.
from what I hear the insurance you have to carry is WAY up there. so much sometimes that it makes it hard for the business to be profitable, that plus fuel costs whew... Just what I hear, I have no first hand knowledge.
good luck if you do start it up

I had a hotshot for two years. it was fun for a while, until I got married and wanted to be home more.
decide if you're going to lease onto someone or be independent . there are advantages to both. if you choose to go on your own find a prorate service. they can get your ICC authority setup, which will lead you to dot#, insurance and fuel reporting. the service cost a small amount, but well worth it.
as far as loads: I have been out of it for a while, but with the internet it is pretty easy to find loads. try internet truckstop and look for partial loads. if you want cars try AAAAdvantage. I use to use them a lot. DAT also has load listings. they use to be faxed to me every night, but I am sure they email them by now. I did all this in 99 and 2000. just get 100% legal and don't try to run in the grey areas. you won't have issues at the scales that way.
I am a trucker running my own authority if you are new to the business you are better off leasing to a company for a few years. there is a lot to learn and a low profit margin it doesn't take much in the way of mistakes to make that profit margin backwards.
I have never found a way to make hotshot pay.
I haul scrap steel and do pretty well.
BTW, Welcome to FTE.
