Cool Tranny I.D. ????????

Hi, just found out thru changing tranny filter that my C4 is not from 1965. judging by filter it is from 1970-78 vehicle. Trying to get correct modulator valve...didn't shift twice. (3 speed) Now wondering about yr. of engine- 289, & tranny, definitely a C4, 6 bolt to engine, 1965+ hard time reading the numbers. faint. Got engine/tranny from junkyard, out of a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500. Time to get accurate info on engine/tranny. Never assume! any help will be appreciated.

The Ford trans ID tag is bolted to the case, left side above the manual control lever.

1965 Galaxie 289 came with either a C4 OR an FX Cruise-O-Matic (aka small cruise-o). The pan gasket of an FX looks very similar to a C4 pan gasket. How many bolt holes in the C4 pan?

C4 trans filters: one type used from 1964/69 (Motorcraft FT-36-A), another from 1970 thru 1979 (Motorcraft FT-40-A). There are two more. One was used in 1970/77 Bronco's (Motorcraft FT-49), the other in 1973/80 Pinto's and 1974/78 Mustang II's (Motorcraft FT-42). C4 pan-11 holes.

FX trans filter: Motorcraft FT-31-A / FX pan gasket = B5AZ-7A191-B 14 holes.

may not be 65 engine, tag is missing on tranny. 11 bolt pan went to change filter and fluid...old filter has a tab to the side , holds in a ball bearing?and spring. found out when I tried to install the new filter(which I bought for a 65. thinking that was what it was) spring and ball fell into fluid pan. pics online show that would be a 70-78 c4 some days are better than others.

I listed all the 1964/79 C4 filters above.

289 = 1963/68 / 302 = 1968 and later.

Engine ID: Look for a stamped number on the vibration damper. 289's used 3 types, 302 used at least 5 = 1968/79.

Rain? What's that, so far this year we've gotten 1/2 an inch. Last yr = 3"

Mebbe I should call my Aunt in Sandwich, and ask her what rain looks like.
