Fuel tank filler pipe hose

Fuel tank filler pipe hose
The fuel tank pipe filler hose on my 1994 3.0 extended cab 2 wheel drive fleetside Ranger is leaking at the tank. The hose seems to be leaking through slits just about the junction point. The local Ford dealer price is $242.01 for a replacement hose. Are there other ways to correct this problem? Would using radiator hose be satisfactory? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I wish you were correct!! I called back and verified that the $242.01 does NOT include installation, it is for the part only. I might try calling an out of town Ford dealer to see if I get the same information.
None of the local aftermarket parts stores in town have a listing for this part but there are no NAPA stores local. I'll find the closest store and give them a call. Thanks for the advice about removing the bed. I've considered cutting a hole in the bed for access then cut a piece out off a wrecked bed to lay over the hole and screw in place but I'm concerned about cutting something under the bed. Maybe someone has had experience doing this.

I see posts like this every day here on FTE.
FTE has two Ford dealer parts department sponsors that give members a discount off the actual Ford suggested list price. I'd be willing to bet that the $242.00 price you were quoted has been marked up over 40% from the actual list price. Why pay that? (I recall the price for that hose was 50 bucks back in the late '90's).
One member here was quoted something like $353.00 for a part from some price gouging Ford dealer. The actual list price was $190.00, and his net cost was $148.00!!!
Direct Ford Parts (Gaudin Ford-Las Vegas) & y2kfordparts (Millennium Ford-Seattle). Their links are on the forum main page. Email one of them them, give them the application...and get their price.

Sometimes you can get luck with a junkyard replacement. You need fuel rated rubber for the hose. I replaced mine with a metal tube that is bent to the correct configuration and used a piece of the old hose to clamp it on. Cost me about $15. That is a good alternate if you can't find one.

If I were an FTE sponsor, I'd be PO'd everytime I read those lmc posts.

I obtained some better prices thanks to NumberDummy's suggestion but they are still 3 times what I expected.
Direct Ford provided me the following:
"Allan,Thank you for contacting us.The part# and price are: F47Z9034P Retail $357.53 Sell $197.95 Shipping is approx $24.00 Mike "
I got a price from another provider of $224.54 plus shipping.
A third price, from Y2K, looks good at $140.71 but I suspect that the price is for an early '94 instead of my late '94. I do not know what the difference is but the late '94, according to the local Ford dealer, is much more expensive. I'll verify Y2K price and if correct give them the order. If anyone knows what the difference is between the early and late '94's I'd appreciate getting the information.
Thanks to everyone for your comments.

I bought a '92 2.3 only to find the seller had cobbled up a filler hose that did not vent properly, so I could not fuel it at the station.--it would take about a pint and spit it back. I had to get gas in a can and syphon gas into it slowly.
I went to Pick-n-Pull last weekend and looked at Rangers there. One was missing the hose, and it had been taken out by dropping the tank. So--I found a '90 with hose & tank in place. I dropped the tank far enough to be able to loosen the clamp at the tank and got the hose out without damaging it.
To put it in my truck, I took out the 3 bolts holding the bed on the driver's side and backed out the 3 bolts on the other side to keep the bed located. With my Harbor Freight farm jack in the wheel well and some padding I raised the bed enough on the driver's side to be able to do the R&R.
It works like a charm. I did it by myself, a lot of work at the JY, but the cost was $6 plus the gas used to get to the JY.
PO had used plastic sewer line for the bend into the tank, I wonder how long that would have lasted.

Thanks for the information Ray Mac. I haven't tried going to a salvage yard yet but I'll give that a try. My Ranger is still sitting in the carport. I did put an additional clamp on next to the stock clamp. This helped but did not completely fix the problem but now there is only a small seep if the filler pipe is full. I'm still amazed that the best price that I could find for a new hose is about $200. It seems that the Ranger hoses do not last very long. I wonder if the hoses were defective or if the "new" fuel causes them to fail. I've had cars and trucks that were 40 years old and the hose was still good. I still have the original hose on my 1949 Plymouth! I pulled the tank off, cleaned and sealed it with POR tank sealer and put it back using the original hose with no leaks!
Thanks again for shareing your experience.

I used a lot of Permatex #2 on the tank outlet before putting the "new" hose on.
I have no idea how long the fix will last. I'm thinking of selling the truck soon to be able to afford an Aerostar, but if I keep it I may try to look for additional backup hoses at the yard.

P.S.-Glad to see you like Mopars too.
