K&N system yes/no
I am considering putting a K&N system on my 01 SD V10, is it really that helpful, worth the money, or a waste of time? I use the truck to tow my 7000# camper and my brother occasionally (when his chev can't handle the pressure) uses it to tow a 5000# kart trailer. So we are averaging around 15-20K miles a year. Ive heard different arguments whether its worth it or not.
What's your opinion?
Thanks,
Scott

FACT: new K&N
FACT: i do used oil analysis
FACT: oil came back bad due to air filtration (means dirt/dust getting in engine)
FACT: removed K&N, used normal paper filter
FACT: subsequent used oil analysis showed no problems
Your decision if you want your engine digesting dirt/dust for MAYBE 5 HP of that.
If you want to do intake right for normal road use, i'd suggest looking into ram air scoop with good filtration or a supercharger system.
Scientific analysis of oil tells you a lot about many things. So does dyno time BUT even dynos (yes even th best ones) can be off by a few HP as can the condition of the car (heat soak), etc.

A diesel has NO throttle.... plus a turbocharger to cram air into the engine. It draws tremendous amounts of air and needs a low-restriction intake. A diesel is also more sensitive to dirty air than a gas motor. Your money, your choice.... I'd stick with the stock air filter in the interest of engine longevity.
Now, a K&N on a gasser..... Gas engines have a throttle, and the only time you really benefit from a low-restriction intake is at or near WOT. How much time do you spend with your foot on the floor? Dragstrip, OK.... street, only if ya wanna smoke 'em away from the stoplight.
My 2 cent's worth.... your mileage may vary.
Remember..... REAL trucks don't have sparkplugs.

Well, before this gets into the over-argued gas vs. diesel thread, here's 9 pages of comments about the K&N from the V10 forum...
