Rear hatch handle

I have a 88 BII. The interior side of the rear hatch handle has a raised "X" on the end onto which a metal cam piece attaches by small bolt that screws into the handle end. In my case, the "X" portion of the handle is entirely sheared off, leaving it with in the metal cam piece with the bolt attached to it. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a result of someone trying to force the handle and this piece shears off to prevent entry? I guess that I will have to go searching the junk yards for a replacement. I was curious as to whether this is common, normal wear or whether someone tried to break in. It looks as if it would take a good amount of force to shear this off completely. I don't image that there are any sources for these handles out there and that this is a junk yard part. Thanks.

Try, www.lmctruck.com. they sent me a catalog, has hard to find stuff in it.
May be easier and cheaper from the junk yard tho.
And to answer your question, unless it had allready been cracked, i don't think it would just break off. I have to twist preaty hard to get mine open.

I've seen these broken before, remember your BII is 20 years old and these are cast aluminum. You can get them through LMC Truck as mentioned, or I have seen a slew of them on eBay brand new. I have seen lots available at the junk yards though. New or used, they aren't expensive.

Yea they break all the time there, from what I see its very common. You will find one at the junk yard but look at it closely once you have it off to be sure it's not already cracked and starting to fail.

They also break at the base where it meets the door on the outside.
