strange noise.... (merged)

hi all... after doing some searching about the iwe issues, i have a question about mine. i started hearing a noise.... kinda like a quiet marble/grindy/rattle noise, and it happens around 1200 - 1500 rpms, only while driving. if i accelerate beyond 1500 rpm's, it will stop. if the truck is stopped, the noise will not occur. im wondering if it is something maybe in the tranny? i thought it might be the iwe's, but the hubs seem to be working just fine. when i put it into 4wd, it will go into 4wd, but the noise will still occur, and when going back into 2wd, it will still occur. are there any quick thoughts that i might want to check before going to the stealership? i did climb underneath, and checked all of the heat shields, and everything seems good. thanks in advance !!!

I don't think it would be the IWE's if the sound stays while 4wd is engaged. Is it more like a tapping type noise or is it really grindy?

its kinda hard to describe of course... but, it is kinda like a grindy noise more than anything, but very soft.... you can only hear it with the radio off. i did find a big leaf in my intake under the filter... and at first i thought that might have been it.... but it wasnt. thats the kind of sound though, almost like a leaf might sound if crackling around by the filter. my next step i think is to return my edge to the stock program just to see if that does anything, but i doubt it will.

Hi Matt, I would bring it into the dealership and take a tech for a ride with you if possible. It doesn't sound like it has to do with the 4x4 system, being as its rpm dependent, it may be something with the transmission or something very simple.
Good Luck

no, i havent given any thought to the cat... but, that does bring something to mind... lately i have noticed a rather strong "nasty" smell coming from the exhaust. i have the magnaflow SISO muffler on it, so i dont know if that has anything to do with it at all.

update on my strange noise !!!

hi all, i just thought i would post this quick update.... a few days ago, i posted about a strange noise i was hearing in the 1200-1500 rpm range only while driving... well, i made an appointment at the dealer to have it looked at. so, i needed to return it to stock.... took out the edge, and also put the stock intake tube back on ( i had changed the adaptor piece out for a 3" PVC pipe a couple months ago... saw the idea from a post on this site). well, when i got back in the truck and drove it, i cannot get it to make the noise anymore.... must have been from the intake mod.... i just never heard it before i guess, since it was rather quiet. so i guess the moral of my story is that for anyone who has modded their intakes, you may hear different noises coming from it...... all is well for me, im gonna just leave it stock and put my edge back in.

does the noise resemble air going over a very, very sharp edge? The reason I say this, my 89 F150 had a similar sound. It started AFTER I put on a 3" PVC pipe in place of my stock intake tubes. The noise drove me crazy. I finally figured it out to be the air being sucked into the "new pipe". It would only happen if I just craked the throttle body butter-fly up to about 1500 RPM. I also had an open air styly filter attached to the end of the "pipe". When I did a complete rebuild, I cahnged the entire intake over to a Lightning GT-40 style and no more noise.

it was a wierd sound... rather quiet, but noticable, from 1200-1500 rpms, and only while driving. now that i put the stock tube back in, it is all gone. i thought it was strange.... just glad i figured it out before i took it to the dealer.
