20.0 Avg Mpg tonight on Interstate
I reset the mpg counter, went from Lewisburg TN to Lebanon TN through Nashville on I-65 and I-40 (84.4 miles 1.5hr drive). Got 20.0 avg mpg on Interstate. We stopped off for a quick bite and got back on the road. 3 people, 3/4 tank of fuel, junk in toolbox and my 5th wheel hitch in truck, 60F ext temp. Truck has 6,600 miles on the odo. Kept turbo 10% or lower. Able to keep speeds up to 70 but had to slow down on hills. I seemed to get passed by everyone at 70mph.
If I got the turbo over 10%, mileage would drop several points. When I got to my house tonight after going through town and the stop lights, my Avg MPG was 19.8. Although it was a pain to keep letting off the gas pedal to keep the turbo under 10%, it is possible to get better mileage on the highway unloaded. I'm pretty sure over 20 avg mpg is possible with this motor with the auto transmission.
The last time I tried this, I could only get 17.2 as my best mileage Interstate mileage for the same trip, same driving style (keeping turbo 10% or lower).

Very nice!
I'm actually one of the few (lucky ones I guess) that can relate to good diesel mileage.
My 250, in the city, has gone from (these are all hand calculated) 9mpg (brand new) to 15.6 mpg (now at 4500 miles). If I let it idle a lot, it drops down to 13-14ish MPG which is understandable, Ford says 1 hour of idling = 33 miles (or something like that). I'm curious to see what the truck will do on the highway...when it was new it was at 14-15ish mpg (2 days after I bought it).
One thing I find interesting is that the lie-o-meter says "11.9 mpg" meanwhile, last tank it was 15.6 MPG hand calculated.
My 5,500lb lighter, 3.0L v6, 4x2 Ranger does 15ish in the city so, the mileage I am getting out of my 250 is pretty good I think. I won't even get into what the Grand Marquis gets...that car shines on the highway with the 2.73 rear end...city mileage...wayyyyyyyy different story.

Its still the lie-o-meter though unless he checked it after filling up and then refilling. I also drove today over the cascades unloaded and got a whopping 10.5 mpg on the lie-o-meter. Keeping it below 10 psi is impossible. Any little hill here and it is at 20 plus psi. flats or slight uphill slope is 12 to 15. Maybe something is wrong with my truck or maybe this is just another story. Who knows. Glad you think you are getting 20. I hope you are.

Has anyone seen lower boost number once broke in?

Mine now is averaging 18.5 hwy at 6800 miles. New I was getting 15.5-16. I still can't get better than 13-14 city (actually suburban), which is the same as I was getting new. The 10psi or less boost is definitely key to numbers going up. Though weirdly, the best mileage I've had so far was just a few weeks ago on a fishing trip in the Eastern Sierra. For those familiar with the area, I was doing a ton of driving up and down 395 and parts of 120, and averaging 19.5. Can't figure why I was doing better in a hilly area than on the flats, other than the traffic is so light that I'm never in a hurry to stomp on the pedal to merge or get up to highway speeds. Or maybe altitude and temperature?

you guys with 3.73's are gettin all the mpg's....why would ford even build the 4.10 trucks?
the manual says all the same towing weights for both.....I give up, 11.5 mpg DRW with 4.10 doesn't seem to be right....it's almost half of reported numbers you all are getting.
anyway....congrats to you...if the salesman would of been honest,,,,,well that's another issue, cant blame FORD for that.

Don't blame the salesmen. They're just reading the numbers off the brochures. I've been in the RV business for 14 years, so I have an interest in towing, where the auto companies really don't.
If you spend enough time in forums like this you'll meet guys (and gals) who've taken the time to learn what really works. Get past all the blowhards who just repeat what they've been told and you can gain a lot of info.
This is one of the better forums I've seen. The next time you buy a truck, you'll have more info than 99% of the population.

"off the brochures" what are you refering to? they (F350's) are NOT rated, I am told that everytime I call, Forums- yes, but I already shot my wad.

Hopefully Ford will come out with a double overdrive so others can keep those rpms down too. But in the mean time, guys have got to do their research. It is more important now and in the future than it has ever been.
