Talking Used Ranger

My old Ford Tempo has finally seen better days. I am thinking of buying a used 02 Ford Ranger. It is a four speed with a v6 engine and a regular cab. I believe is has about 80,000 miles on it at this time......First of all I need a little help with a question about mpg. Does anyone have any idea about this? I have heard regarding chevies that the smaller trucks do not get any better mileage than the larger ones. They say a four cylinder is the gas saver, but....I like to think that a v6 would have a little more get up and go for me.....Also, is it o.k. if I ask what you think a truck as described above is worth.....Thanks in advance....Nomadic

To be honest, if it is the 3.0 V-6, it will get the same mpg as the much more powerfull 4.0. The 3.0 has about the same hp as the 02 and up 2.3 4 cylinder, but does have a bit more torque. The 4.0 is for sure the better of the V-6's as the 3.0 is old school tech with cam in block. However, the 3.0 is very reliable and solid power plant. I use to get 22 mpg local with my 04 4x4 4.0 with the manual trans and 25 highway, but I had some mods and live and work in the country, so I did no real city driving. A lot of the 3.0 guys report around 20 mpg on the average. As it's worth at a guess I would say around 4,500 to 5,000 as trucks are high around here. The year is good but the milage is getting up there. The bodies hold up well, so thats no real concern for the year and the 3.0 is easily a 200,000 mile engine as I'm sure thats what it has being a regular cab, just keep the oil changed and seafoam every now and again.

The 3.0 will get about 18-20 mpg.

rubydist is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
The 4.0 w/ auto will get 16-20, depending on how you drive and what kind of miles you drive.
