I'm pretty sure you can go with a 285 75 R16 with little or no rubbing with no lift, but I'm not completely positive. I believe that a 285 75 R16 is just under 33".

How wide are your new wheels and what's the backspacing? Wheels for a 315 should be at least 8" wide. If the backspacing is the same as a stock wheel, then your wheel/tire will stick out 1" further to the outside (on an 8" wide rim). Also, because the section width (widest point of the tire at the sidewall "bulge") is roughly .4" wider on each side than a 285 tire, it will stick out by that much on each side also. See this website for a good explanation:

Hope this helps,
Pat

I have a F250 2003 6.0 Diesel and have 305/70-16 (33") on Mickey Thomson Classic II 16x8 rims.
No rubbing in normal driving, and some minimal rubbing driving hard offroad.
Truck si not lifted, but going to put new leafs inf fron lifting 2", to put new MT rims and 315/75-16 (35") on MT Classic II 16x10 rims.

the only 285 75 r16 tire that has done any rubbing on my completely stock 03 f250 super duty was the super swamper SSR's. this tires are 33.9 inches tall with the tread brand new. the only rubbing i had was when i had to make some tight turns. now before i ran my super swamper SSRs i had been running Firestone Destination Mts size 285 75 r16 which are 33.1 inches which didn't rub at all not even when i was out playing in mud and bouncing all over the place.

Toyo Open Country AT 315/75/16s just barely rubbed on mine. 305 will still be tight, I'd go with a 285 or 295 if you're at stock height.

I ran BFG 315 70 R17 on my factory wheels with no problems. I rotated them at each oil change and never had any abnormal wear. I just purchased the same tires again but with wheels this time. Mainly because 4 wheel parts had such a deal that the wheels were free basically. Mine is an '05 with the levelling kit FWIW.
