You wouldn't recieve test files if your running bigger sticks.
Discrimination towards people that have bigger sticks, that does hurt my feelings. On a serious note I figured that's what it was. I had figured that he was wanting people that were more or less stock as that is the majority of his tuning population.

I'm sure if you wanted to try something all you would have to do is call with an idea. The bigger injector is what sets you apart from the norm.
I have the XCal3 with Matt's tunes for my 06 F-350 CC LB 4X4, MBRP Stainless turbo back. Mostly pull a 5th wheel 13K GVW using Matt's Heavy Tow. I'm new to diesels and not a mechanic. Haven't been able to get answer to some questions from Matt, so maybe you all can answer. Does it take time for your truck to learn a tune? Do you do any harm switching from a Tow Tune to an Economy tune frequently, or should a person just leave it in the Tow Tune when not towing? My truck doesn't shift into 5th gear until I get up to 65 mph, is it possible to get a tow tune that shifts earlier? I'll be traveling to CA this winter with friends that only go 55 - 60 mph. Will traveling in 4th gear for long periods do any harm? Thanks for any info
I believe that it takes a while for the tranny to relearn its strategy after you change tunes, it constantly watches how you drive and will adapt to that in time. I'm trying out the new Max Economy tune, but since it's summer the truck does a lot of sitting and my Dyna gets to stretch its legs a lot....
OK, we have had a lot of rain the last week so I've been taking the truck. I had just under 350 miles and was still a hair over half a tank. I filled up today after church, the station had a cash price of $4.67 a gallon, and it took just under 18 gallons. I figured mileage at 19.8 MPG uncorrected and 20.2 corrected. I use a 2% correction factor because of the slightly larger tires I have which cause a low odometer reading compaired to many trips clocked with my GPS. I am quite happy with the results, though I will be trying the ASE tune after another tank running the Max. Econ. tune.
thedaddycat,
I just sent you a pm with some questions about the Max Econ tune... I've been running Hybrid Race and I'm curious to find out how it might compare. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am curious as well. I am running Hybrid Race as well since it seems to produce the best mileage overall. Especially if I hit the highway. Please let us know how the Max Econ works out. I may have to go start trying those other tunes as well. Matt was a great help when i bought my tuner, but I know they sure do stay busy.
I never got any mileage to speak of on any rave tunes,,just a smile on my face and some bald tires!!
I am using the newest max econ now and yielded me the best so far at 55-65mpg on secondary roads of about 20mph. I went 620miles for 31 gallons I believe it was not even empty. I get less MPG on the HWY..65-80MPH gives me about 18-18.5. Best stock or stock plus I had of mixed driving this yr was 17.75 so it is better for once.

I think you might have mixed up an "h" and a "g" in that last post

How is the power of the max econ tune? Is it stronger than stock, or is it detuned from stock?
Also, have you done any towing/hauling of any kind with the max econ tune? I'm curious as to if it could handle my 5,500 lbs. walleye boat and trailer.

yeah, I had a typo or two..If you go to the spartan site Matt has finally listed the files and tow ratings w/ power ratings.
the gen econ is 90HP and towable up to 7.5K I believe, but check the site to be sure. I tow my 31' camper w/ it fine and it is 9K.
The max econ is not rated for towing, I just checked. I would guess the power is about 90HP, as it feels very similar to previous econ tunes to me.It is definetly more powerful than stock.

Here's the bulk of a PM I sent to GroundhogCK in answer to his questions:
"I live in CT and work in Providence, RI, a 40 mile commute each way. It's mostly two-lane back roads or highway. I have three stops from once I get out of my neighborhood until about a mile from work out of the whole 40 miles so it's pretty much get up to speed and stay there. I drive at 50 on the back roads and on the highway I set the cruise at 60 or just a hair under. I usually keep the engine in the 1500-1750 RPM range and let the tranny work, sometimes I get up to 2000 RPM and every once in a blue moon I'll jump on it to where I get boost up to 25-30 psi, usually going up a big hill out in the sticks. Most of my miles are commuting with some shorter trips added in to the mix.
I've only run this tune for one tank(actually half a tank, 340 miles) so those were preliminary numbers. I'm running it for another test cycle(half a tank) to back up the first numbers and then I'll probably start working on improving aerodynamics. First thing will be to take off the extra mirrors, they're 4" round convex and definitely add drag. There are a few other things I'll try too.
I have the Hybrid Race file but have not tried it yet, so I can't offer any opinions on how it is vs. the Max. Econ. tune. I don't tow so no input there. Well, I did tow a snowmobile trailer with a couple garden tractors once but I doubt that was more than 750 pounds total including the trailer... I think I will try out the ASE tune next, but since I get 40+ MPG on my Harley I usually take that in the summer so it will probably take a while to get more numbers.
Matt has unlocked the options with that tune and I think with the others too. I set it up for a little stiffer shifts and dropped the last upshift so I get top gear at about 42-43 MPH and 1250 RPM. You can adjust it to suit your tastes and driving habbits. There is plenty enough power for me with this tune, I'm more interested in the economy of the tune than being able to light up the tires at 30 MPH.
There are other factors at play here too. I keep the tires aired up, 70-75 psi. I get regular balance/rotation/alignments done and have the centramatic balancers too. I have run HSS for the last 10K miles and use fuel additive every tank. I used the 404 from Chris at Lubrication Specialists(who make HSS) to give the fuel side of the injectors a good cleaning and it seemed to help some too. It's all the little things that add up to get me up to where I'm at. If you look back to my posts from the fall of '06 you will see that I was getting maybe 17-18 before I put on bigger tires, snow plow, C-Betr mirrors, etc. It dropped to the 16-17 range and then I started working my way back up by doing lots of little things. I was asking about an economy tune back in early '07 and was told back then to go with an agressive street tune. As far as changing tunes, if you want to keep the power on tap under your right foot then stay with the HR tune. If you want to squeeze out those last few miles out of every gallon of fuel it can't hurt to try the ME tune. You can always change back it you don't like it..."
I have now run about 5/8 of a tank and gone 420 miles on the second run with the ME tune. I was at 340 miles at the half tank mark so it looks like I'm on track for 20+/- MPG again.

The Aggressive Race was my best tune for MPG if being religious on the go peddle yielding MPG of 14City and 18HWY, until now I am on Stock Plus tune for about 2 months and have achieved another 1MPG improvement. I seem to have all the same "added little" things that thedayycat has. I might be maxed out for optimum fuel economy with my 35" all terrains and level kit but on my next few tanks I will switch to Spartans Max Economy tune and see if I can achieve better MPG.
I too don't care for more power as what I have is more than I will ever need.
BC- definetly try the econ files. After many different econ files w/ and w/out hot lock I never saw and increase on any of matts files except the older and now trashed UEH and the latest max econ. I used the stock plus since for daily driving it shifts the best. Now I tried the max econ for several tanks in mixed drivng w/ an avg of 18.5, that includes running errands for hrs on end w/ low speeds in town and some hwy and back roads. best I ever got w/ stock or stock + was only 17.75 and that was very hard to obtain due to driving habits. I am pleased since I have achieved over 20 now on two tanks, but not mixed driving those were longer trips. Now I know the truck is able..
Try it out, all Matts files are now listed on his site.
