F-350 6.4L diesel with 3800 miles. Is some blackened soot staining of the tail pipe tips normal? Not real heavy but yet noticeable. Most of my driving milage has been on a trip with a bed mounted camper up to this point. I can't say I've really noticed a regeneration, but thats not to say it hasn't occured...
My pipes are black also. Been like that since day one and I now have about 12,000 miles. I get 15.5 mpg running around here in the southern WV mountains on 2 lane roads. I get 17 to 18 when I hit the Hillbilly Highway (I-77 South) to NC. I've only witnessed 1 regen since new.
Mine are black, too. I haven't noticed a regen in a long time. 7700 miles on it. I have the intermittent shudder/boiling smoke during takeoff, too. I feel like I have a cracked DPF, but have a gut feel the dealership will give me the runaround. Plan to take it in next week and roll the dice...
Oh, one more thing. I asked the diesel tech at my local dealer about it and he said "I'ts a diesel, It's supposed to smoke".
Run away from that guy. He obviously does not know what he's talking about now. The 6.4 should not put out any smoke, or any noticable soot on the tailpipe. The exhaust system is designed to filter 100% of the smoke. White smoke is caused by the truck going into regeneration when the DPF is not up to temperature, it's just unburned fuel. You have to really pay attention to know when the truck is in regeneration sometimes, slight things like low boost while cruising at highway speeds, a small shudder or loss of power for a second. I thought mine only did it every 1,000 miles or so untill I got my SCT programmer, now I know it does it about every 300 miles because it tells me when it's active. Sometimes I don't fell a thing when it goes in.
Basically if you dealer tells you that black tail pipes are normal for these trucks, tell him he's full of it. They're just making up excuses so they don't have to replace the DPF. It's not hard for them to do, but they are hard to get a hold of.
And my truck has over 16,000 miles and the pipes are as clean as the day I got it. Last 4,000 miles I've been running the 120 hp SCT Extreme Tune.
If you have ANY black in your tail pipe your DPF is malfunctioning , The diesel guy at my dealershiop ran his finger around my tail pipe..it came out black..they ordered me a new. DPF. With regen there are NO black tail pipes../that is what regenh is all about.
