5 spd leaking

While i was crawling around under my truck i notices that my tranny was leaking. i couldnt tell exactly where but i know its not out of the tail shaft or the imput shaft. the covers on the side dont appear to be the problem. does anyone have any ideas wheree it could be comming from? im not sure but i think its comming out somewhere up to.

Did your DMFW ever go out or shake really bad? I have seen a few broken rear cases from bad DMFW's usually on the driver side of the case and just small hairline cracks hard to see.

Is the tranny low? the oil could be an engine oil leak that is coming down the back of the engine making the tranny wet. Look in the valley of the engine for fuel or oil puddles.

DMFW = Dual Mass FlyWheel. The 96 5spd uses ATF, as does the t-case. Is your fluid leak red? Pull the upper plug on the tranny to check the level and verify there is ATF in there. It's about halfway up the driver's side of the trans.

ATF fluid i didnt know that i was suppose to put that in my gear box? i have always had jiffy lube put whatever konda of lube was required. The fluid looks like the gear box fluid. and it seems to be leaking somewhere on top of the tranny. when i bought the truck the dealership told me that the truck had a new clutch and upgraded flywheel. i think its a 13" not sure though.

Okay, zf5 is not supposto have ATF in it. M5OD which would die from a 7.3 runs ATF, as does transfercases now.
I'm not sure what oil to actually run in the zf5, but ATF would not lubricate well enough for the stress put on it.

They probably put 10w30 in it. If your wondering what is in it. So, sounds like you need to change the oil in it. They run ATF in a lot of the stuff now because of the detergents. Most people I know who have ATF transmissions still run Gear Oil in them anyways, because they say the ATF will not lubricate as well. Other mechanics I've talked to say they will run 50/50. (I duno how wize that is...)

If the newer ZF runs ATF, great. I'd still run Oil. haha.
I run 20w50 in my m5od.

The problem with oil is.. well it spreads out.
My power stearing pump leaked slowly, but it was enough while driveing to make it look like my transmission, engine, oil pan and my transfer case were all leaking.
It even poled on the tail shaft like the seal there was leaking.

I agree with Tim. Look in the valley of the motor first to see if it is wet with oil. Use a flashlight and a smal mirror.

Is this the dreaded cracked bellhousing that I have been asking about around here every now and then. It seems some people see it alot and some have never heard of it. I am just curious how many of you have seen the cracks.

hahaha. yea. I had to use pipe dope to finally fix it. The people who installed it screwed all the nylon bushings and stuff.
