78-79 ford help

Hi guys i am looking to buy a 78/79 ford and i have run nto a few questions along the way. by the way i am interested in 4x4 models only. First what is the dieffernce between the f100, 150, and 250? and the option like explorer, custom, ranger? I would really like to get a reg cab and am looking to lift it using the CAGE offroad 4" lift. This lift works with the front coil spring setup but i know some trucks had leaf springs up front. which setup would you recommend for a tough trail truck/daily driver. Also if i went the way of the coil spring front setup i would like to drop a dana 60 front diff. in. i heard there was a kit to make the diff work with coil springs/radius arms? any help or links to the informatin would be greatly appreciated, i'd like to do things right the first time. Thanks

Hello, the best advice on the site is to do a search for each question. These things have been covered several times in great depth. All these trucks are tough. The easiest way to get a d60 in front is to buy a 250 with one or all 350s came with them. 79 is the first year for 4x4 f350. All 250/350s came leafs in front. 100/150 4x4s had coils. Mods. for the truck are based on your abilities, fundsand use of the truck. These things are not cheap once you get one. Everyone here will agree on that. Always room for improvement, and always room in the gas tank.

Welcome to the site

Please don't be afraid to make one thread per topic and title that thread with thre topic in it.

You have so many questions in one thread it will take some time to sort out.

Basically F100,F150,F250,F350 are just GVWR or weight related models.

They all share the same body and trim

Custom,Explorer,XLT,Lariat are TRIM LINES.

With a Custom being a truck you could build anyway you want.
Explorer was a special marleting trim line

XLT was standard Luxury Trim Line

Lariat beginning in 78 became an even more Standard Luxury Model .

You can read about them on my website here.

and 79 brochure here.

If you want coils on the front has to be 150 d60 on a 150 expensive mod then you will need a rear to match. why you stuck on coils only the thing better is ride. cheaper to lift a 250 or 350 or 73 to 77 highboy already lifted some had d60 fronts.

You could have one of the big name axle companies custom make a D60 fit in a half ton but it would be really expensive. An alternative to that is to just beef up a D44 with stronger components.

Basically a F100 is a F150 but just with fewer mor leaf sprins more of a light duty pickup F150 is a 1/2 ton F250 is a 3/4 ton and F350 is a 1 ton basically as the numbers go up they weigh more like 250 and 350 are more beefed up in the suspension

I think F100 has 2.5'' springs in the rear..

and are you all sure ALL F250s had leafs in the front? I thought so too, but there's an F250 Ranger for sale locally that has coils in the front.. Has a 460, 2WD, dual tanks..
