Thanks I will post topic from now on. I was able to figure most of vin out, now I am trying to figure out trans and axles. axle code is 379 and trans is k. I believe thats a dana 60 rear but not sure what rear is and, a c6 auto transmission?

That axle code is 37 J (not 379)
37 - Dana 60 5300 lbs 3.54 ratio

J means power steering on a specific GVWR front axle

K = A/T - Yes...C6

 

Thanks , I did find it there. I wish the forum was here twenty years ago. I had a beautiful 78 F-250 4x4 camper special with dual tanks and a built in tool box and sold it for beans I had no idea what I had, I loved that truck!

 

This info was only available in shop manuals for the yearr in question.

No Online source until I made it available.

There are online VIN# decoders but they are far inferior to my page. (slaps self on back)

Yes I know your page was invaluable and thank you. I am looking at a 79 F-250 with 70k original miles in almost mint original condition so I wanted to be somewhat educated.

 

I just checked the plate again and the axle code is clearly 379 is this a mistake? Also what are the two sets of #s to the right of the vin on the door post? F0981 and T0663?

 

Okay.. 9 is the code for a 4500 lb front axle.

Does it have Power steering ? probably not.
The code does not show PS.

 

that seems like an awful lot for a front axle. I don';t know if it has pwr steering. if it doesn't is that such a hard thing to add?
