Trade In or Keep Truck?

Trade In or Keep Truck?
Just wanted everyone's professional opinion on wether to keep or sell my truck and replace it with a new one. I have a 2005,psd,fx4,cc,lwb,auto,srw,lariet bought new May 2005 and now I have 166K on the truck. I love the truck, never have had any engine or trans issues just a rear axel seal, both batteries, and front right hub. I tow about 10% of the time with a utility trailer weighing between 4-10k and I am trying to decide wether to keep the truck. I love everything about the truck, its in excellent conditon in and out and the dealers only want to give me between $15-18K. How much do engine/trans rebuilds cost and when can I expect to have to do them. I do all the scheduled maint. and it runs excellent. I also am not very happy with the mpg on the 6.4. I rented one for a month and put 6K on it and the mileage was 1.5-2mpg less than my FX4 and it was 2wd.

Thats hard to answer. I'll advice you on how I come to my decission. If the truck is paid for then no way would I sell/trade it. You covered one step in that its mechicually sound. If you owe on it to you owe more than they are offering? In this case NO way. You covered another step in that you like the truck. Are you goingto replace w/ a another SD? You might still need a SD if your down sizing Soits not going to hurt to have an extra truck. Can you afford the payments of the new truck w/out trading in?
If you like the truck and its paid for and you can afford the new one then I say keep it. You never know what is going to happen and you know you'll still have a ride.

Yes, the truck is paid off. I was planning on trading in the truck and paying the difference for the new truck. I was only expecting on paying 15 to 20k difference but that doesn't look like the case. I would like to sell it for 23-25K but I will have to find a buyer that has cash and doesn't mind high miles. How long can I expect the turbo to last.

Take your monthly payments for the new truck and put them in the bank. If you have problems you will probably have the money for the fix? Does the engine use abnormal amounts of oil or any at all. A new transmission is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new truck. You have to make the final decision but in all fairness you have to do the ballancing act. No one knows your truck like you do.

Previous posts indicate the real possibility of getting 500,000 miles through investing $10,000 - $15,000. Much more economical than trading in and buying a new truck (if you have the cash to lay out). I wouldn't worry any at all about the mileage. I do think that some upgrades would be very wise (since the warrantee is gone):
Return regulated fuel system
Gages
SCT
EGR and EGR cooler delete (might even consider changing out oil cooler)
CCV re-route
Exhaust (3.5" dp and 4" cat back)
Head studs
Fluid dampner
Lastly - worth considering a new turbo, but maybe it would be overkill.
With all of the above, probably would want a real good alarm system and jimmy-jammers.

I'd definitely keep it. At the rate you're going you rack up a lot of miles(60-70K) every year so it has to be mostly highway or else you live in your truck. Those are the easiest miles, everything is up to temp and stays there, not a lot of start and stop, less brake wear, etc. Since you have had no major issues and done the maint I don't see it giving you a lot of trouble. I had 175K on my last truck, a '87 F-150 that I had for almost 20 years. I expect this truck to last at least 15 years and it has 80K on it now. It's almost always cheaper to keep it and do the repairs as needed than make payments. As stated above you can do a lot for the money you'd spend on a new truck, even if you got 25K for yours.
