power window failure - help

Hello all:

I have a driver window in the "all the way down" position that won't come back up. After removing the moisture barrier and checked the circuit, I've determined that the motor is receiving power. When I press the switch to move the window down I hear a click and can feel it in the motor as well. When I press the switch to move the window up, there is nothing - no sound or movement.

Is the motor my problem or is it something else? Trying to lift the window while depressing the switch does nothing.

The generic manual I have indicates that removing the regulator and motor can be dangerous? Is it? Is it tricky? I don't understand their instructions.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - it is colder than a witches @#$ here.

Thanks,

Chris

What you can try is get a small battery charger, unplug the motor, and hook the battery charger leads to the motor wires. Hook them one way, and it will go up or down, and then swap the polarity of the charger leads, and the motor will go the opposite direction. This will test the motor.

That's a great idea. I thought of doing this with my truck battery, but was having to wait until tomorrow to get wires. I have a battery charger for my 12V electric motor battery. Would this work or could I damage the motor with it?

That's what window motors do when they are shot.

Common occurance it seems.

You can try replacing the brushes once you get it out.

There is more danger damaging the charger than the window motor. Most battery chargers have circuit breaker. As long as the charger is protected with a circuit breaker, it will work. You could also use the truck battery, but you have to be careful and not let the wires touch together, the battery has a lot of power behind it.

re: power window failure - help

Thanks Dave:

The charger didn't work for me but the direct battery hookup did. Since I was able to get the window back up this way does this mean that my problem is definitely the switch? I've read some things about a one-touch down relay. I wouldn't think this is the problem because my window wouldn't go "up" (as opposed to down), but I don't know much about these things.

Can this switch be bought from somewhere other than Ford? The two local suppliers I've checked so far can't get it for me.

Thanks again,

Chris

I don't think you ever said what year and model vehicle you are working on?

I just looked at the diagram, and there is a one touch relay, but it's incorporated in the driver's master switch. That switch has a lot of stuff inside it. Looks like a dealer only item.
