Fuel gage

My fuel gage on the front tank is not working, the truck is a 1990, 4.9 with E40D. Is the fuel gage tied in with the fuel pump or is it separate. I am going to replace the fuel pump and was wondering if that would also take care of the fuel gage.

The fuel gauge sending unit bolts to the fuel pump assembly and all it is is a variable resistor that is activated by movement of a float that is similar to old toilet bowl flush float in miniature. Over here in Hawaii, the only place that carries it is the Ford dealerships at a cost of $75.00.I've seen it online at $39.00 which I feel is reasonable.
