highboy aft axel fuel tank

I just replaced my cab and have decided not to place the fuel tank back in the cab. I want to put the fuel tank behind the axel where the spare tire should be but I am wondering if anyone knows of a company that sells them. or dimentions of any that anyone has built. I have a company that will build one but they wont be able to start it till after the first of the year and I am hoping to have it in by Thanksgiving
Thanks in advance for any info or sugestions

I am sure somebody will chime in on a board sponsor that sells fuel tanks. However, I am not one of them. I would recommend doing a search on Google, and start from there. If your truck is a 4x4, you will be hard pressed to find a factory reproduction tank to go there. If you are a 2wd, any junkyard truck will have the tank and the necessary hardware you will need. Use caution when buying the tank, you should hold your breath untill you find one that is perfect, with no rust. Depending on where you live, that might be tough, but you can get a good used tank for cheaper than reproduction.

I re-read the title and seen you said highboy, so my bad. If you want a factory fitting tank, you want one from a 78-79 crew cab. They had rear tanks, and had that stupid crossmember limiting what you can get away with, and the same frame rail width. Good luck finding one of those tanks however, they are as rare as hens teeth.

Actually the 78-79 tank won't work either. The frame width on the highboys is narrower than on the 78-79's. Aerotanks is your only aftermarket option. Some people have swapped in mustang tanks, ranger tanks or even tanks from a super camper special. I think I'm going to try and turn a 78-79 bronco tank sideways and then make my own filler neck.

I was led to believe that all 2WD and 4WD crewcabs were built using Highboy frame widths. I tried using a hitch from a std cab 2WD on my 2WD crewcab, the hitch was 4+ inches too wide. Are you saying the 78-79 crewcabs are wider than that of the highboy, yet narrower than the 73-79 2wd, + 77.5-79 F250 4x4's? I'll have to get a tape measure out and verify that, (once I find a highboy to measure.)

Would the rear tank from an Early Bronco work? I believe thier frame width is a little less than a Highboys. I have seen 23 gal aftermarket tanks for the EB.

You can make almost anything work, it all depends on the size of your checkbook, and the size of the BFH you use.
