Truck V6 durring the Inline six???

Hey guys, I had a question. I know Ford brought the 4.9 into play around 1965. My question is, what six cylinder motor was Ford using before that, and did they stop producing that motor when the 4.9 came out? Did Ford just make the inline six's for trucks, and didn't make any V6's for trucks? I know the 300 was stopped when Ford brought the new body style out, and introduced the 250some CI V6, but durring the rule of the Inline six truck motors, did Ford have a V6 for the half tons also???

I looked it up and came up with 300, 302 and 351 for the half tons durring the 1990's. But I've heard of men on these forums claim to have an older f150 with a V6 in it. I'm a little confused. =/

EDIT: I wasn't sure where this thread was supposed to go. I appologize if I put it in the wrong place!

To answer the first part of the question, Ford had a 223-cube straight six prior to '65...a pretty darn good engine in its day, but no match for the 240/300 six. And Ford used both the 223 and 240 in cars throughout most of the '50s and '60s.

I've read a couple books that say Ford put the 3.8L V-6 in some very early-'80s half-tons, but I've never seen one. Doesn't mean they don't exist; just means they're rarer than hens' teeth.

Being is my 1980 - 1996 Hayne's manual mentions the word "V6" every now and then, I guess they do exist, but I've never seen one, or personally heard of someone seeing one.

Ford offered the Essex 3.8l v6 in the early 80's on the F100. They also offered a 255ci v8.

Late model 4.2L is a 256 cid engine, at least by the reference that I use of 61 cubic inches per liter. The experts may say it's a 255...

3.8L is the same engine as in the Lincoln FWD of that period. It was also the optional engine in the Taurus and Sable cars. Not something that you would want in your p.u. as it was low on hp and torque. I have seen and driven them in the pickups and cars back in the day. More of a curiosity for a collector now than a prime motivator to work with. 4.9 liter gets way better fuel mileage.
