It will probably take a while to compile a complete list. It would be easier if you explained what you needed so the list doesn't need to be as long.

It would also help to know what you mean by "fit." Almost anything can be made to fit with enough time, money, and know-how.

That said, here are a few things you can look at:

2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 OHV are generally considered interchangeable, as long as you take the entire engine management system from the donor. Note that there very few (if any) interchangeable parts between the engines.

Transmissions are generally interchangeable, as long as the bell housing bolt pattern can be made to match and the electronic controls are made to match. Some transmissions have a removeable bell housing, which can make such swaps easier, others have an integral bellhousing which means you have to get the trasnmission from the correct donor.

D28, D35, and D28/D35 hybrid TTB front ends are pretty much interchangeable.

not really a reply?

I also need to know which transmissions can be used in a Bronco II with automatic and 4WD. I've found one on Craig's and the seller says it will not go into gear. I've heard of this with a manual tranny, but not an auto, and am assuming it will need a new(er) transmission. Is there anything about the 4WD that could cause this problem of non-engagement of the tranmission's gears?

Can a similar year auto from a V6 Ranger work in a Bronco II? Will the 4WD require a "special" automatic?

I called a salvage yard today and they said up to a 92' ranger tranny would fit the 90' bronco II.

thanks for info

I'm new here so not sure if you can e-mail folks directly, but thanks twisted limb for your info.

A recent message from the Bronco's seller says that the Bronco will go into reverse but not into any forward gears. Instead, it acts like it's in neutral. That is, the engine will speed up with the gas pedal being pressed, but the vehicle will not move forward. My Acura Integra does this, and I'm told that the cable that is moved by the gear shifter is stretched and needs to be replaced or at least tightened. Does the Bronco II have a similar arrangement?

I'm hoping to locate a used transmission for under $600.

Man, now I wish I hadn't given my Ranger/Bronco II Chilton's manual away when I sold my Ranger.

twisted limb, are you looking for automatics or manuals? As far as automatics go, a '90 BII can use an A4LD from an '88 to '94 2.9 or 4.0 as a direct replacement. I would point out that the 4.0 A4LD had some internal upgrades that make it stronger, so it might be a better choice. An '85-'87 A4LD could also be used, but would require a few changes to convert it to a two solenoid valve body.

If you're talking manual transmissions, you either have an FM 146 or an M5OD. From what I understand, the two are basically interchangeable (assuming the bellhousings mate to the engine). The M5OD was used well into the '90's and is usually considered the better of the two transmissions.

Bronco rider, the transmission and transfer case operate independently. The only way I could see the t-case contributing is if it is stuck in neutral or something, which would make it look like the tranny isn't engaging. But the t-cases on these have very few problems, where the A4LD has reputation for problems. Rolling the dice, I'd bet that the problem is with the transmission before the t-case.
