My 92 IDI 7.3 has heavy light blue white smoke when its cold, and smoke litely when it warms up. It skips and sputters intermittently, and now an then will die out all together. Im not sure if im sucking air or if something else is up. Also the fuel filter light came on, so i replace it figuring the light would go out and the skipping would stop, but the lights still on and, it runs better but still not great, any ideas?
Take the filter header Schrader valve core out and hook a hose and pressure guage to the outlet.........crank engine see what you get for pressure, should have 4-6 psi from a good lift pump.
Volume test same place hook a hose to it crank over the engine 10 seconds you should get 1/3 pint of fuel minimum or 1 pint at 675 rpm in 30 seconds... engine running
Important the fuel shutoff solenoid (FSS) wire on the IP should be disconnected if you do not want a start just cranking. Re connect FSS after test complete.
Welcome to a great forum site for IDI trucks. Start out by making sure you are running a good dose of fuel lubricant additive. How may miles are on your injectors. Worn out ones (if you have 150K miles or more and original injectors) are likely due for a new or rebuilt set. FWIW I ran a year with my truck smoking at idle, and wished I had installed a rebuilt set a year earlier than I did.

Its nice meeting all of you, i appreciate all your help, i recently bought the truck, and am now just starting to work the bugs out of it. I put some power service to it and the more i drive it the better it seems to get. It sat fr over a year before i bought it. Also i noticed the return lines a weeping fuel, i went to move them to see if they were loose and they were, how do you tighten these, with the injector supply lines or? Thanks for all you help, this is my first indirect diesel and am still getting famlier to them, dont get me wrong there nice but i still feel direct is the only way to go.

I think most folks would agree direct injection is a better idea in general but there are definitely some DI engines I wouldn't want anything to do with. Even with a slightly less efficient fueling system these old Cornbinder engines are some of the best around, and certainly the best dollar value out there right now (diesel or otherwise, I'd argue).
The 12-valve Cummins was an IDI engine too, wasn't it? 'Nuff said, I guess!
